Tough!
First two that come to mind are from Sara Groves.
“Add to the Beauty” from Add to the Beauty:
This is grace, an invitation to be beautiful
(how profound for such a short sentence)
“Maybe There’s a Loving God” from All Right Here:
Maybe this was made for me
For lying on my back in the middle of a field
Maybe that’s a selfish thought
Or maybe there’s a loving God
Maybe I was made this way
To think and to reason and to question and to pray
And I have never prayed a lot
But maybe there’s a loving God
One that, as a parent, kills me every time is from Pierce Pettis’ song “Absolom, Absolom” on Making Light of It:
You were the laughing boy who bounced
Upon my knee
You learned to play the harp
And use the shepherd’s sling
Always watching me
My impressionable son
Oh Absalom, what have I done
Also, the group Rush has a lot of profound lyrics.

Hard to choose, but the very first thing that popped into my head was Coldplay’s “Politik:”
Give me love over
Love over
Love over this
Goes through my head a lot.

My favorite one right now is “How Far The East is From The West - One Scarred Hand to the Other” That one is in my brain just about every morning when I awake!

Christian:
“the chains of yesterday surround me
I yearn for peace and rest” - just really really where my heart is right now. weary and ready for peace and rest.
Secular:
I promised I would never leave you
And you should always know
Wherever you may go
No matter where you are
I never will be far away

Sarah Kelly has a song called “Out of Reach” -
“I am out the reach of yesterday...” and
I see life ahead of me, and not behind… so this is what peace is...”

Deemus,
Wow. I love those.
Good stuff everyone!

I don’t think I can pinpoint a singular favorite, but here’s a great one.
Tree63 - The Answer to the Question
“He is the ultimate reflection
of holiness and true perfection
He is all He says He is”

Euphrony, that was the line that made me fall in love with Sara Groves, I just love that lyric. (from “Add to the Beauty")
It’s really really really really hard for me to choose a favorite lyric. Here’s one from Andrew Peterson:
“And the man of all sorrows, he never forgot, what sorrow is carried by the hearts that He bought
So when the questions dissolve into the silence of God, the aching may remain but the breaking does not, the aching may remain but the breaking does not in the holy, lonesome echo of the silence of God”
(aargh, just writing it out gives me goosebumps, Andrew Peterson is a very very gifted lyricist)
Most of my favorite lyrics are in fact by him.
In the spirit of Christmas, one of my favorite Christmas lyrics is from “What Child is This?”
“Nails, nails, shall pierce Him through
The cross be borne for me for you
Hail, hail the Word made flesh
The babe, the Son of Mary”
Dec 07, 07 at 03:08 pm
In the spirit of Andrew Peterson, I present:
Burp, burp Chicken Wiggle
Don’t spitup, don’t spitup
from “Chicken Wiggle” on Slugs & Bugs & Lullabies (cowritten with Randall Goodgame).

More
by Matthew West
album: Happy (2003)
Take a look at the mountains
Stretching a mile high
Take a look at the ocean
Far as your eye can see
And think of Me
Take a look at the desert
Do you feel like a grain of sand?
I am with you wherever
Where you go is where I am
And I’m always thinking of you
Take a look around you
I’m spelling it out one by one
(Chorus)
I love you more than the sun
And the stars that I taught how to shine
You are mine, and you shine for me too
I love you yesterday and today
And tomorrow, I’ll say it again and again
I love you more
Just a face in the city
Just a tear on a crowded street
But you are one in a million
And you belong to Me
And I want you to know
That I’m not letting go
Even when you come undone
(Chorus)
I love you more than the sun
And the stars that I taught how to shine
You are mine, and you shine for me too
I love you yesterday and today
And tomorrow, I’ll say it again and again
I love you more
I love you more
Shine for Me
Shine for Me
Shine on, shine on
Shine for Me
(Chorus)
I love you more than the sun
And the stars that I taught how to shine
You are mine, and you shine for me too
I love you yesterday and today
And tomorrow, I’ll say it again and again
I love you more
(Chorus)
Than the sun
and the stars that I taught how to shine
You are mine, and you shine for me too
I love you, yesterday and today
Through the joy and the pain
I’ll say it again and again
I love you more
I love you more
And I see you
And I made you
And I love you more than you can imagine
More than you can fathom
I love you more than the sun
And you shine for me

"I stood in this sunsheltered place
til I could see the face behind the face
All that had gone before had left no trace”
Secret World by Peter Gabriel
Favorite because it give me goosebumps, makes my heart flutter, and makes me gulp in air thinking of my dearest and deepest Love- my husband

Impossible to answer! If you gave me, say, my favorite *100* song lyrics, I’d have a chance. With only one, I could only answer perhaps with something that fit right here, right now.
Dec 07, 07 at 09:08 pm
"When this old world is blown asunder,
and all the stars fall from the sky,
Remember someone really loves you,
We’ll live forever you and I.”
- Billy Joe Shaver, “Live Forever”
Dec 07, 07 at 09:08 pm
Word of God, speak
Would you pour down like rain
Washing my eyes to see
Your Majesty
To be still and know
That You’re in this place
Please let me stay and rest
In Your Holiness
MercyMe
I could listen to that song over and over.
Dec 07, 07 at 09:40 pm
It’s dark and lonely and the path is unclear
Can’t move my feet because I’m frozen with fear
then you say, my child, my child
i am always here, i’m at your side
I’d leave ninety-nine
Leave them all behind
To find you
(For you alone) I’d leave ninety-nine
Leave them all behind
To find you
Audio Adrenaline--I really love this song, it’s a great reminder when I start feeling like I have to tackle things on my own.
Also I love the one mentioned by your mom (Casting Crowns):
Jesus, can You show me just how far the east is from the west
‘cause I can’t bear to see the man I’ve been come rising up in me again
In the arms of Your mercy I find rest
‘cause You know just how far the east is from the west
From one scarred hand to the other

Great question!
I have a couple. (Four I can’t chose which… sorry.)
Rich Mullins, The Love of God.
There’s a wideness in God’s mercy
I cannot find in my own
And He keeps His fire burning
To melt this heart of stone
Keeps me aching with a yearning
Keeps me glad to have been caught
In the reckless raging fury
That they call the love of God
Rich Mullins, Color Green
And the moon is a sliver of silver
Like a shaving that fell on the floor of a Carpenter’s shop
And every house must have it’s builder
And I awoke in the house of God
Where the windows are mornings and evenings
Stretched from the sun
Across the sky north to south
And on my way to early meeting
I heard the rocks crying out
I heard the rocks crying out
Be praised for all Your tenderness by these works of Your hands
Suns that rise and rains that fall to bless and bring to life Your land
Look down upon this winter wheat and be glad that You have made
Blue for the sky and the color green that fills these fields with praise
And the wrens have returned and they’re nesting
In the hollow of that oak where his heart once had been
And he lifts up his arms in a blessing for being born again
And the streams are all swollen with winter
Winter unfrozen and free to run away now
And I’m amazed when I remember
Who it was that built this house
And with the rocks I cry out.
(Why) I think Rich spoke in poetry, spiritual truths, while never being trite and always raw and beautiful. These always, never fail to break me. Sara Groves does that to me sometimes too.
U2, Still Haven’t found…
I believe in the kingdom come
Then all the colors will bleed into one, bleed into one
Well yes, I’m still running
You broke the bonds and you loosed the chains
Carried the cross of my shame, of my shame
You know I believed it
But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for.
One more… Dylan, Tambourine Man.
Then take me disappearin’
through the smoke rings of my mind,
Down the foggy ruins of time,
far past the frozen leaves,
The haunted, frightened trees,
out to the windy beach,
Far from the twisted reach of crazy sorrow.
Yes, to dance beneath the diamond sky with one hand waving free,
Silhouetted by the sea,
circled by the circus sands,
With all memory and fate driven deep beneath the waves,
Let me forget about today until tomorrow.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
I’m not sleepy and there is no place I’m going to.
Hey! Mr. Tambourine Man, play a song for me,
In the jingle jangle morning I’ll come followin’ you.

I love the song by Steven Curtis Chapman called “Miracle Of the Moment”. There is one particular line that stands out to me. He says; To Him ;(God) “the future is history”
That is so simple and yet so profound. If we could just really believe that God is really in control and knows our future, it would truly change our lives. We would completely trust Him and not worry at all !
Dec 08, 07 at 07:55 pm
That is really difficult to pick, but the first one that popped in my head is a song called “The Answer” by Shane and Shane:
“I have found the answer is to love You and be loved by You alone...You crucify me and the world to me and I will only boast in You.”
What a great song!

Hey Seth, “The Love of God” is mine too.

This time of year - my favorite lyric is “Pleased as man with men to dwell - Jesus, our Emmanuel” from “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing”

Rich Mullins~Hold Me Jesus~A Liturgy, a Legacy, and a Ragamuffin Band
Surrender don’t come natural to me
I’d rather fight You for something I don’t really want
Than to take what You give that I need
And I’ve beat my head against so many walls
Now I’m falling down, I’m falling on my knees
This is me.

Lately, it has been from Collective Soul…
‘Somedays I surrender, Someday I resolve
But everyday I conquer with your love.’
So true of my life.

Hometown weather is on TV
And I imagine the lives of
The people living there
And I’m curious if they imagine me
They just want to leave
I wish that I could stay

"I won’t give up on giving you the chance to blow my mind.”
-Jars of Clay
*because God loves to set up scenarios where he still “blows our human minds” with his mind-blowing miracles!!

Pardon my long post—feel free to edit it! But what a great website you have! Helping Christians share in ways like Eph. 5:19 says: “Speak out to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs..”! A favorite song I have is
THIS MAN by Jeremy Camp. It tells about the mystery of how and why Christ died for us, and how twisted this all was to allow God to place on Him everyone’s punishment and subjection to lies and darkness. It was and is a Love we’ll never understand… That’s what makes this song so great, it’s all about God’s love as demonstrated there, really for us messed-up humans. (The closest analogy in other art I can think of is the death of Aslan the Lion in the Chronicles of Narnia C. S. Lewis novel, now a movie.) Here are the lyrics:
--THIS MAN--
“In only a moment truth was seen, revealed this mystery
The crown that showed no dignity he wore
And the KING was placed for all the world to show disgrace
But only beauty flowed from this place
Would you take the place of this Man
Would you take the nails from His hands
Would you take the place of this Man
Would you take the nails from His hands
He held the weight of impurity
The Father would not see
The reasons had finally come to be to show
The depth of His grace flowed with every sin erased
He knew that this was why He came
Would you take the place of this Man
Would you take the nails from His hands
Would you take the place of this Man
Would you take the nails from His hands
And we just don’t know
The blood and water flowed
And in it all He shows
Just how much He cares
And the veil was torn
So we could have this open door
And all these things have finally been complete
Would you take the place of this Man
Would you take the nails from His hands
Would you take the place of this Man
Would you take the nails from His hands,
from his hands, from his hands, from His hands”
[-- END --]

Chuck,
Thanks for the kind words! I hope we’ll see you around here often.
I’ve heard this song on the radio, but since I usually have three kids in the car when I listen to the radio, I’ve never really noticed the lyrics before....thanks for sharing them!
