Worship Leader Awards?

“It is time, again, for you to give recognition and thanks to the artists that have assisted you in guiding your community in worship. This is not, like many other awards, a popularity contest that glorifies celebrity, but a medium in which you can honor and acknowledge the excellence of the artists who are giving their lives and talent to create innovative ways for the Church to experience God. Below are the nominated entries for the 2006, Worship Leader Praise Awards; the winners will be announced in the March/April 2007 issue of Worship Leader magazine.”
Worship Leader Awards...seems kind of odd to me. Thoughts?

No, not odd: Bad bordering on evil. I don’t know how better to describe this adventure in missing the point. Leading worship is always walking a fine line, especially in our media-driven times. This kind of idiocy is like leading someone to the edge of a cliff, kicking them in the butt, and then yelling, “Don’t fall!”

I’m just waiting to see if I’m nominated for Most Improved Hand Raiser in the 5th Row

Yes, maybe a little odd, but at the same time it would be nice to see some ‘regular’ worship leaders out there who are doing something different and making it work. I don’t think it’s a bad thing to recognize excellence and innovation, just as long as it’s done in the spirit of graciousness. I think that’s a word, anyway.

Wow. How backwards. If this was an award for songs written etc. I could see it happening (but again it would be a popularity contest).
I say we nominate Kat just to see what happens.

I second the nomination. Let’s see how far your Technorati rank will carry you, eh?
Kat, what have you gotten yourself into?

Yikes! I guess I need to work on my g-c-d transitions…

Seriously, though, my thought is that I don’t think we need national awards on something like worship leading or pastoring.
The purpose of both of those jobs is for those people to use their talents to direct attention to the Lord, not themselves (frankly, though that’s the role of all believers...).
I think it might be more beneficial for Worship Leader magazine to dedicate an issue to encouraging people to thank their worship leaders or to write in letters of appreciation.
Events where we vote and rank just ring of jr. high to me and I think they tend to be more business oriented than people or God oriented.
Just my thought. Again, though, I’m sure WL Magazine has great intentions, I’m just not sure it works for their audience.
(Don’t forget to VOTE for KAT, though!)

Oh, I agree; I’m sure they have great intentions. However, without exception, I have found that any time an award is presented there is a non-negligible degree of “popularity contest” involved. This applies to Oscars, Dove Awards, Nobel Prizes, or Flakiest Pie Crust. And the presentation of the awards inevitably comes across as a mutual pat on the back. Encouraging people to individually express appreciation to their worship leaders is a much better suggestion that offering a chance to stroke the egos of people who are (or at least should be) trying to deflate themselves in humility to Christ.
