Why I Love My Church: The Series

Next week I’m going to start a series entitled:

“Why I Love My Church.”

It seems like a lot of folks are discouraged about church so I thought I’d share my experience in hopes that it would encourage others that there are great churches out there. They’re not always the biggest or the coolest or the most well known, but they’re out there and they’re changing the world.

So, to get the discussion going:

What is your experience with church?

Have you found a church your like? Why or why not? What are you looking for in a church?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts and experiences.

I’ll get the ball rolling here.

I don’t know.

I am a volunteer at our church for music.  2-3 times a month I lead.  I find satisfaction in this.  I also help the youth group on Wed. nights with music.  Again - satisfaction.

But I still feel like something is missing.

This is a little tough, Kat. As you are probably well aware (since we hang out in the same corners of the blogosphere), the word “church” isn’t always used in the sense that you are using it here.

We are the church, all of us who trust in Jesus. So “my church” is your church. But I’m not trying to be difficult here—I know you mean your local church body, that has a specific name on the sign out front, and a specific Statement of Faith that says what they believe.

I have one of those, too, and I’m not at all discouraged by it. I get good teaching, and they do good work reaching out to the poor, the needy, the hurting, and supporting missions work and lots of other good things that I believe are pleasing to the Lord.

Honestly, though, my closest sense of being in the church, and being an active and thriving member of Christ’s present work on Earth, comes from my small group. That’s really “church” for me. We are intimately involved in one anothers’ (messy) lives, and know who to go to in times of sadness and need, as well as times of joy and celebration. It’s strong personal accountability, discipleship, intense prayer partnership, and as if though that wasn’t cool enough, it’s friends to break bread with on a very regular basis, to laugh and have fun with, and people whose company we enjoy.

I look forward to hearing the good report about what the Lord is doing in your lives, deep in the heart of Texas! grin

And what a GREAT bunch of people they are C-hammer.  Tell them I said hello would you?

Next time we are in town you might find a couple of beggars at your door demanding Roast beef.

Church is a hard prospect for me, and I think I figured out why recently- I want my own way.  I see too much ____ and not enough
_______.  Not the best attitude, is it? It hurts to say I love the church I attend, but I can say I love the people there.  The place that I feel deep love for the church (though it’s not a building) is when I’m with intimate friends in worship, prayer, song, listening and seeking the Lord together.
