The Moment I Felt Old

I feel old.
Thank you Dr. Moore. Thank you Kristin. Thank you Rachael Lampa.
Dr. Moore
On Friday I went to my dental checkup only to find out that my regular dentist was on vacation. When the “substitute” dentist walked in we immediately recognized each other from ..... somewhere.
Finally, we realized that he was a Resident Assistant when I was an Assistant Dorm Director....he’s ... 4...four....FOUR years younger than I am. And he’s a doctor.
He’s a child. And he’s a doctor.
Kristin
I’d forgotten about being old until this morning when I read on Brody’s blog that it’s Kristin‘s birthday today.
Happy Birthday Kristin.
I have enjoyed getting to know Kristin through blogging this past year and for some reason I assumed she was my age.
Like me, she’s married.
Like me, she has a 5 year old.
Like me, she has a 3 year old.
Like me, she has a baby.
Unlike me, she just recently got her driver’s license.
Ok. Maybe that’s exaggerating a bit. But she was in junior high when I was a freshman in college!
(Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.)
Not that I mind being old or being born in a completely different decade than both my dentist and my blogging friend, but it all just brings back horrible flashbacks of...of...of… Rachael Lampa.
Rachael Lampa
The day after I turned 25 we (my department at KSBJ Radio) were putting on a Rachael Lampa concert. My job was basically to hang out with her for the afternoon and make sure she was where she needed to be throughout the day.
After the concert, I was standing next to her while she was signing autographs when a young lady who’d just had her shirt signed came up to me and asked, “So are you like her mom or something?”
“Her........M-O-M?!”
Ok. Granted, we’d been togther all day and we’re both half filipino so maybe we looked something alike, but her M-O-M?!
Is that even biologically possible?
It gets worse.
I was relating this story to her label rep, Andrew and I said, “I can’t believe she asked if I was Rachael’s mom, I mean I just turned 25.”
Andrew said, “You just turned 25?”
With a slight staccato, I replied, “What do you mean just? Did you think I was older than 25?”
“I’m not answering that.”
That was the moment I felt old.
I just wanted to extend a warm “thank you” to Dr. Moore and Kristin for helping me relive that moment.
So What About You?
So, am I the only one, or have any of you had “Gosh, I’m old” moments?

A couple of things:
1. I work with two other people that were once my students when they were in middle school. One of them is married with four children.
2. I’m taking classes to be a school administrator. One of my professors was 11 years younger than I. That means she was in elementary school when I was going to college the first time around.
It happens to the best of us.

I feel 25. One itty-bitty little problem. My birthday is July 12. And I was born in 1967. Enough said.
I feel your pain

Heh. Well, I’m even older than Jeanine.
When people much younger than you insist on talking about how old they are…
When people who are within a few years of the age of your own children start talking about how old they are…
When you no longer have the energy to even worry about how old you are…

Age is all a state of mind people, and within the blogsphere, there is no age!
Kat~ for me there’s a huge difference between my friends whom are my age, that are not married, and don’t have kids, between the older friends of mine that are married and do have kids. I completely relate more to the friends who are in the same stage of life as me. A girl did my hair awhile back and was my age, asking me where I went clubbing. I told her I was married, had 3 kids, and am in bed by 10pm. Our lives are very different.

Rick,
I’ll bet it’s pretty rewarding, though, to see those kids (that are now your coworker) grow up and do well.
Jeanine,
Ahh...someone has a birthday coming up!
C-Hammer,
You win.
Kristin,
“Age is all a state of mind people, and within the blogsphere, there is no age! “
That’s what I love about the blogosphere. It’s fun to be able to interact with people regardless of age, gender, job title or anything else that usually separates people.
I hope you had a good birthday!

We have some good friends whose daughter is 12. When she was 11, she saw a picture of a typewriter and said, what’s that? She didn’t know what a record was, like a turntable. And she had never heard of Barbara Streisand. Gasp
BTW, I forgot to respond back in that other post. Sound of Music will be July 27-29. Friday and Saturday nights 8 PM. Sunday 3 PM. Info here. =-) Now those rehearsals are one place where I feel really young and it’s a blast!

Dr. and Mrs. Moore are some of my best friends.
And no longer being eligible to audition for American Idol makes me feel old. Ugh.

Fancy Pants,
Wow. Yeah, I remember chatting with a group of 12 year olds (about 8 years ago) and they’d never seen little house on the prarie…
Thanks for the info. I’m slightly, sort of, if I feel crazy, flirting with the idea of taking the girls to see the show. They LOVE the Sound of Music. It’s a pretty long trip though, so we’ll see. I’ll check out the site to see exactly where it is…
Cach,
Oh G-R-E-A-T!I suppose you’ll tell him that I blogged about him and I’ll not only be old but a dork as well. C’est la vie.
I didn’t realize there was an age limit for American Idol. So, does that mean you’re older than that Taylor guy? You certainly don’t look older than he does.

Kat,
I’ve felt this way, to some degree, all my life. Even as a kid, I was curious enough to know about older things; if I were 12 today, I would know and probably have used a typewriter just to say I had. I always listened to older people to pick up various idioms, which were somewhat antiquated then and are rarely heard now.
That being said, I went to a movie with a friend on Thursday night at a theater that serves full meals. They carded me when I ordered a margarita, so that made me feel a little young. But then, the lights were dim and they probably couldn’t see the gray creeping into my blonde hair in that light.
I’ve got #34 coming up, which Mrs. E will tease me about endlessly.
Oh yeah, AI does have a age limit which they only recently expanded after being sued for age discrimination.

The most recent realization that I was getting older was hanging out with Phil Wickham. He is 23. Yeah. I think he was in 7th grade when I graduated High School.

Kat,
I’ve been trying to email you about the show but my fricka frackin’ yahoo won’t load and I don’t know why.
I’ll keep trying, but until then, I’d love for you guys to come to the show! I know it’s a long drive, though. It would be so fun to see you and your sweet girls again.... I’ll email you eventually.
