Why Avatar Ticked Me Off

Ok. First of all, I’ll say that it was an entertaining movie. I was amazed at the special effects. All in all, though, special effects won’t make me a better person and there were a few things in the movie that weren’t awesome, so as far as the movie goes, I could take it or leave it.

However, there was one thing that particularly annoyed me. It wasn’t in the movie. It was actually outside the movie. It was this:

Seriously? “Recycle” your 3D glasses?!

The movie was all about taking care of nature, being “one” with the earth, etc. So then they ask us to “be green” and “earth friendly” and “recycle” our 3D glasses in the bin that was RIGHT NEXT TO THE TRASH CAN. The TRASH CAN where we were supposed to put our PLASTIC water bottles, our PAPER napkins and ALL our other trash.

Clearly, their priority is the environment.

This was such a lame ploy that Jimmy and I made jokes about it most of the drive home and we KEPT our glasses.

We are rebels. Hear us roar.

I imagined myself attending the movie on a nightly basis and at the end, rising up in the theater, fist in the air, exposing the corporate greed disguised in the name of being green and leading a movement of people who fought against “the man” by KEEPING our 3D glasses.

Ok. Maybe not.

I don’t mind that they want their glasses back to cut down on costs, but I wish they wouldn’t pretend that they’re being altruistic about it.

So, if you go see Avatar, keep your glasses and “recycle” them elsewhere. Rise up, people!

Sigh. Tomorrow, I’ll go back to blogging about my cute kids. This revolution stuff is tiring. I feel the need to go hug a tree.

I’ve heard a couple folks make this same comment after seeing the film.  Similar to seeing the enormous “Wall*E” cardboard displays (which would be trashed the week after the movie left the theatre) advertising a movie about waste.

I’ve not yet seen Avatar.. I am uncomfortable with blue people… it’s a trust thing.

FYI - If you haven’t seen it yet, I replied to your soul-audio post.

We don’t have to worry about recycling the 3D glasses on Kauai as our movie theatre isn’t capable of showing stuff in 3D. They don’t have the equipment needed.

I have no desire to see Avatar & I don’t know why.

Should there be 3 trashcans next to the recycle bin?

Haven’t seen it yet, but if I do, I’ll keep the glasses.

We kept our glasses. We are rebels too. The recycle thing threw me off too.

I just loved the whole colorful world, wasn’t it neat?

I definitely did not leave a new person from seeing the film, but was thoroughly entertained!

Haven’t seen it.  I thought it looked a bit strange.

After we saw “Up” they had those recycle boxes outside the theater.  We kept ours too...for a different reason.  We were hoping to get cheaper tickets to the next 3D movie we see. 

We kept ours too. Partly because we wanted to (we saw it on NYE and were keen to see what the fireworks looked like through them), and partly because the “recycle bin” was full of rubbish.

I haven’t seen Avatar and I don’t know if I will. But, THANKS for the heads up about the glasses. I live in Honduras and I don’t think the fancy plastic glasses got down here, but you better believe I’d follow you right out of the theatre with that revolution of yours!

Caroline - How weird is it that we were commenting on each other’s blogs at the EXACT same time?

Pokinatcha - I’d say I feel sorry for you that you can’t see the movie in 3D, but I live in Waco and you live on (in?) Kauai… You LIVE in 3D.

Keith - at least 3 trashcans would make their ploy slightly more believable.

Tressa - I was smiling like a giddy schoolgirl at the visual and special effects. It was incredible. I was almost afraid I’d get motion sick it seemed so realistic. That was definitely amazing.

Lisa H - Whatever your reason, you stuck it to “the man.” I’m proud. 

Paula - can I just say? I love that you used the words “keen” and “rubbish” I can almost hear your accent…

So did the fireworks look cool?

Oh no!  It’s people like you that make the rest of us have to pay a surcharge!!!!

You don’t put your shopping cart away either do you?

Amy, our cinema actually encourages us to keep the glasses, and then they don’t charge us for them next time!

No, I haven’t seen it.  Blue people do not excite me.  And what annoys me even more is that James Cameron won so many awards for that movie when there were much more interesting and thought provoking ones out there. 

I think it would be funny if all 82 million people that went to see that movie sent James Cameron their glasses.  Then maybe he would be to busy to make another lame movie!

Sorry, had to vent!

Amy - I do put my shopping cart away. Even in the rain with 3 kids.

I’m actually quite picky about that sort of thing. I pick things up at the store and put them away - even if I didn’t knock them down.

And if the bin at the theater had said “Help us keep our costs down by returning your 3D glasses.” I would have happily tossed them in.

Jennifer - I love a good vent. Yeah, the story was pretty lame. It’s like they started with something interesting and then got caught up in special effects. The effects were really cool (at least to this non-movie goer who has never seen a 3D movie before.) But the script only got worse as the movie progressed. It kind of ended up a wash for me.

Ok Dear - You pick the movie next time.  Something sporty maybe?
