What A Sweet, Sweet Girl

image Last Saturday was a big day for me and my girls. We watched Anne of Green Gables together for the first time.

Well, half of it - it’s quite long.

Anyway, we’ve listened to the audio books in the car quite a bit, but they’ve never seen the movie. It was sweet to cuddle with them and watch a movie that was such a part of my childhood.

(If you’re not familiar with Anne of Green Gables, it’s the story of an precocious orphan girl and her new family. )

Today we pulled out our Christmas decorations and put up our tree. As we were looking through the ornaments, The Small Person (5) found an Anne of Green Gables ornament. She showed it to The Smaller Person (3) and they both “oohed” and “aaaahed” over it for a bit and then The Small Person went back to decorating.

The Smaller Person walked over to Jimmy and softly said to him, “I’m gonna find her Mama.”

What a sweet little girl. This is the same little girl who recently asked me if I’ll get to meet my Mommy when I go to heaven.

She has such a tender heart and some really deep thoughts for a three year old.

(Did you grow up watching Anne or reading the books?)

The lovely Katherine played them constantly for years.  All of my older girls could quote the movies.  I think we have the entire set.

They really are a great family watch.  Great values, and they addressed real issues.  I still remember Anne walking on the roof.  i had one just like her.

I grew up both watching and reading the Anne of Green Gables books.  What sweet girls you have, and fun to share those things with them!

No Anne of Green Gables in my family.  Lil’E was asking us to read her the Little House books at bedtime, but then she changed her mind.

My mom, sister, and I still like to watch it together every Christmas if we are together.  I love it so much!

I love Little House, too, (the books, not so much the tv show) as do my nieces.  Perhaps my two older nieces can watch Anne with us this year if they want and it’s ok with my sister.

I read the books growing up and have not had children yet but, I watch the movies periodically just because they are so sweet and adventurous and joyful and sad.  What a great way to explore all the emotions God allows us to feel.  I love your blog!  I can’t even remember now how I came across it but, it is a joy!  Thank you for making me think, laugh and praise.

I think I read the first two books in elementary school, but nothing past that (where there more? I don’t even know!). I have probably seen the movies, but they don’t really stick out in my memory at all.

I was more of a Little House girl. I never watched the show, but the books were magic.

My sisters read every book, but I never got that into it.  The movies were good enough for me.  It must be a girlie thing.

Deemus,
My girls were pretty taken with the walking on the roof scene. Hopefully, they won’t try to copy her any time soon.

Kristin,
It really has been a fun thing to share with them. I didn’t really expect to introduce them to the books or movies while they’re so little, but they’ve really enjoyed them and seem to get the story.

Euphrony,
I’m sure it will come soon enough. I don’t think I know any girls who weren’t into either Anne or Little House.

Amy,
What a fun tradition. Perhaps it will be one for us as well.

Lorijo,
Me too.

Shannon,
Aw, thanks. I’m really glad you enjoy all of my ramblings.

Superlindsey,
I’m assigning homework. Can I do that? Well, I just did. Over Christmas break you need to watch the movies or read the books again (there are more than two - 7 I think?). Give them another chance and I’m sure you’ll fall in love with Anne-girl. I’m sure you’d remember the movies if you watched them.

MamasBoy,
I’m impressed you watched the movies.

I think there might actually be 8, but I’m not positive.  They are all lovely, though.  I loved the books so much when I was a girl that I went on to read every book that L. M. Montgomery wrote (and she wrote a LOT).  I love her Emily of New Moon series almost as much as the Anne books.  Montgomery’s books were an integral part of my childhood (and even my teen years).

I’m simply amazed how very small children have a sense of life. Your smallest daughter realizes what death is and that the only way to meat her grandma again is to go to heaven. This will surely make her stay away from sins. It’s simply amazing how smart these kids are. Maybe we’re learning more from them than they are from us.
