What Have I Gotten Myself Into?

So, I’m supposed to run my first Half-Marathon in about 4 weeks.
FYI: A half marathon is 13.1 miles.
FYI: The farthest I’ve run in the last 10 years is 6 miles.
Hmmm....
In related news, I’ve thought about buying a Garmin Forerunner, but I’m slightly afraid that I’d spend all that money and then find that I’m obsessed with tweaking it during my run.
So, until I decide whether it’s a good buy for me or not, I’ve found a really cool website that lets me plan my route and determine my pace. The site is called WalkJogRun.net. I love the freedom of being able to run where ever I want to and then, when I get home I can find out how far and fast (or slow as the case may be...) I’ve run.
Any other runners out there? Any tips for me?

I used to run cross country in high school, but I graduated 20 years ago, so I have nothing. Sorry.

You can double your longest distance in a one-time try. So if you can get to where you’re running 7-8 miles regularly before then, you should be able to push through.

May I recommend a nike+ipod? You can use it in any shoes, not just Nike’s. It is so amazing! I recently got one for Valentine’s day and it dramatically changed my running curve!!!! SERIOUSLY!!! My first run with it was so dominant, it got an immediate blog post!
Great post!

Karen,
Ha! That made me laugh…
Texas in Africa,
I hope that works for me. Today I ran 6 miles, next weekend I plan to run 9 and the following one 12. I might even shoot for 15 the following week depending on how it all goes.
The problem is that I don’t have time for much more than 3-4 miles each day during the week. Hopefully, those runs combined with the long weekend runs will be enough to get me through.
Kristen,
Does it just work with the Nano? I thought I’d heard that. I have 30gb ipod video. And congrats on your 5K!

This is great news, Kat! Which race are you doing? The one in Dallas? I’ve got a friend who’s planning on running that full marathon.
From my experience if you’re planning on making running a regular part of your life, the Garmin Forerunner would be the best purchase you could make (other than good running shoes). It will REALLY help you with your training - and you can set it up so that you won’t need to be tweaking it all the time on your run. In fact, I’ve got a 205 that I’d be willing to sell you as I’m looking at upgrading to the 305 (I need the heart rate monitor for the Ironman training I’m wanting to do).
Finally, I would suggest you consider breaking your run up into intervals so that you’re running AND walking all the way through. Keep your eye on Rockstar Runners - I’ll be posting more information about that on there in the next couple of days. Have a great race!

I am stuggling too! I love the Garmin. BUt you know how I use it. I like to look down at it every 5 seconds. But it helps motivate me not to quit!
GO look at the pics of Diesel!

Jeremy,
I’m doing the Bearathon - it’s in Waco the last weekend of March. I’m doing this one because it’s close to home so I don’t have to make Jimmy travel to another city with all the kids just to watch me finish.
B-U-T - I’ve also heard that it’s one of the hardest half marathons in Texas....
I actually did a 10k in December that covers the hardest part of the course, so I feel like I really know what I’m getting into. Mostly.
I really appreciate the RR site. I loved the tip about dealing with side pains while running.
Diana,
Yes ma’am.
