I didn’t see any commercials about this. Had no idea.

I saw it on the news.

You know. I have gotten to where the only television I watch is at night when I get home from work. I watch SportsCenter for like an hour to catch up on the sports news.
Then I go to my laptop and watch the Boston Red Sox on my MLB.TV account.
If you are watching it on the computer, does it really count as TV?

No. The computer doesn’t count as screen time. The computer is inherently educational and beneficial.
That’s what I tell myself anyway.

Actually, I read in one of those articles that they encourage getting away from the computer as well. Something like, no more than one hour with the tv and computer. Sounds impossible.
This program is promoted in schools. Incidentally, American Idol (one of the few shows still considered to be a “family” show) has their big charity (hoping for huge ratings) event this week.
I wonder how many people really participate in this turn off your tv (of no mas tv as it’s known here) week.

euphrony...Ha ha ha
this won’t be hard to do this week because we’ve got family visiting, so we’re hanging out and catching up. Otherwise, it wouldn’t be too hard either. My kids like to read books in the morning, sometimes cartoons, but they can go without. The shows that I like to watch are only a few a week, so not every night. (Gilmore girls, The office) Again, I could go for reading over watching tv too.
What about you, Kat?

"they encourage getting away from the computer as well.”
La la la la, I’m not listening Amy.
Kristin,
Honestly, my kids and I probably watch way too much tv. Every morning we watch 3 shows (1.5 hours!)- Clifford the Big Red Dog and either Sesame Street or Blues Clues/Koala Brothers. Somehow we got in this habit while I was pregnant and it’s been hard to break. I really don’t want them to watch more than 1 or 2 shows per day (for a total of 30-60 minutes), but…
Other than those shows I don’t really watch TV. That’s why I went on that drama/tv binge in the hospital.
Every evening, we do have sports on, but I don’t usually watch it - I’m normally doing stuff on the computer (writing, organizing pictures, reading blogs, web development etc.)
I have been watching lots of movies and video podcasts on my iPod in the middle of the night during feedings, though, these past few weeks. I’ve thought about buying some tv shows, but I figure if I watch one season of a show, I’ll be sucked in and “need” to watch it all the time, so I’ve stuck with movies because they actually have closure.

My friends and I have 24 “parties” every week, have for the past 3 years. It started when we were all (five of us) taking a chem class together at our community college. Our chem labs were Tuesdays, so we got together Monday nights to do our lab reports and then watched 24. Miriam always baked something...and the tradition continues. It’s nice because we see each other all the time, but not to hang out. Monday nights are our hang out nights.

I was going to be so clever and say that I saw a commercial about this but someone obviously beat me to it. I’m just not as original as I think

We haven’t had the TV on this week (although we didn’t know it was a special week to do it).
We got a new boardgame -> Settlers of Catan, and we’re currently obsessed with it. Our oldest (10) understands it enough to play it, but the youngest (8) is on my team (he rolls the dice!). Lot’s of fun!

Ryan,
That is the BEST game ever! Our group of friends were totally addicted to that game...before we had kids. Now we have about 7 kids 4 and under between us and it’s impossible to play without getting a sitter.
Fun. I may need to pull that game out of the closet and challenge my husband.
I have to say, though, I really hate the robber. Sometimes Jimmy and I have to play without it because it makes me grumpy.
There’s also a version of the game called Seafarers of Catan.

Are you?

Kat, I felt bad ‘cause last weekend we were in Kileen and during sets half of us were playing SoC while the other half “hung out” with the kids. Then we switched. We’re eeeevil.
Yes Robber is bad. The other part that causes grief is road blocking. My wife particularly gets grumpy when her roads get blocked by other people (me!)
I know...I’m mean.

A friend of mine introduced me to a computer version of Catan. Pretty easy to set up with any set of conditions. And addictive, since you can play the computer. I’ve had to banish it from my life.

I found the one you can download off of Yahoo, is there a different (free) one?
I’m venturing into dangerous territory now…

The one I have is actually in German (if I remember correctly, its been a while). I see there is an on-line java-based game.
