Toilet Paper On My Shoe

Why didn’t anyone tell me?

I snuck a quick look at my site using Internet Explorer today and it was rather messed up. Apparently, the size of the YouTube videos I’d recently posted threw my design a bit out of whack. The content was pushed all the way down to the bottom of the page.

So all my IE friends out there, did you know? Why didn’t you tell me?

Oy vey, I’m so embarrassed.

Um, I had thought about telling you, but somehow never got around to doing so.  Its the old picture-is-too-wide-for-the-floating-frame-so-it-gets-moved problem.  Sorry about that, I guess.

I don’t have the url in my mind at the moment, but I’ve used a site before that checks a designated web site using Opera, IE, Safari, etc. (around eight or nine variations) and returns a snapshot of the frontpage.  Using this you can easily check the visual layout as other people see it.

If everyone would just follow the rule, “Whatever can be fixed, tell them about, whatever can’t be fixed, ignore” then I’d be embarrassed a lot less.

I’d never noticed because I do all my regular browsing in Firefox (on Linux for that matter!).

Now we have yet another browser to test on: IE7.  Oh the pain.

Sorry, Kat. I’m a Firefox user, too. For what it’s worth, your site has looked continuously outstanding to me! smile

It’s also worth noting that over the last three or four days, Blogger has been almost completely down (or at least mostly down), so yours was one of only a few blogs up, among those I visit regularly.

kat, i’m sorry. i noticed it, but i figured it was something wrong on my computer (which is usually the case when something doesn’t look right), so i didn’t want to say anything.

John, Frank, Bob...whatever your name is,
It’s ok. Just tell me next time? By the way, we’re going to see D tomorrow and the girls keep asking if they’ll get to see John too.

C-Hammer and Euphrony,
You’re forgiven because you use Firefox.

Euprhony,
I forgive you too, but next time please consider the “ramifications” of keeping silent. grin

Michelle,
“Whatever can be fixed, tell them about, whatever can’t be fixed, ignore”
Good advice. I actually haven’t heard that one. By the way, you’re blog today was hilarious. You might be interested in this post I wrote awhile back.

Yeah, sorry Kat, but I only use Firefox any more.  If you want, you can use a service called browsershots.org to see what your site looks like in other browsers.

Rick,
I’m really very glad to see so many people using Firefox. I actually used browsershots.org when I originally set up my design, but I just hadn’t checked it recently...I suppose whenever I do something new (like use YouTube videos) I should stop by browsershots.org to make sure all is still going well.

I mostly use Safari now - I’d added a bunch of plugins to Firefox so now it’s a bit slow for my daily browsing - but when I’m debugging a site I LOVE all the tools available to me in Firefox.

Oh yeah, the Firefox web designer plugins are da bomb when it comes to coding, especially if you give a rip at all about standards.  IE can get goofy with widths sometimes, especially when it gets put into Quirks mode.  I hope they fixed that for IE7.  I haven’t used Safari much, but I’m not a Mac guy.
