Time to Brag on Yourself

Well folks, today is the last day of camp. It’s time to put our arms around each other, jot down everyone’s address, take pictures and sing a rousing chorus of Friends.

Today is the day I want you to brag about yourselves.  Tell us about a great accomplishment. What’s something cool that you’ve done? What are you really good at?

A Few People I’d Like To Brag About...

While you’re thinking of something to brag about, I’d like to take a minute to brag on four people.

Amy, Kristin, Texas in Africa and Euphrony make up the team at Inspired To Action. They are awesome. Last night we put together the schedule for The 40 Day Fast and they were scheduling ninjas. Here are a few reasons why you need to get to know them. (Besides the fact that they are ninjas. Of course.)

Amy - Is an incredible, diligent and faithful woman. She has been managing Inspired To Action for the past few months and has done an excellent job. I’m so thankful to her and proud of her. She loves to read and teach others to read. If you’re into books, you’ll DEFINITELY want to check out her blog.

Texas In Africa is a genius and an adventurer. She’s getting her PHD from UT and she’s usually on her way to some country that I’ve never even heard of. If I recall correctly, she’s been to almost 30 different countries. I can’t NAME 30 different countries. Being that she’s traveled to some of the poorest places on Earth, she’s provided an excellent “front lines” viewpoint on Inspired to Action.

Kristin - Is one of those people that you just like. She’s one of the most consistent writers on Inspired To Action, she’s a great mom and even though I’ve only met her once, I can just tell she’s a really tenderhearted, thoughtful and compassionate person. I’d like to think that if I lived in Nashville, we’d be good friends.

Euphrony is also a genius. I’d tell you what he does, but it’s so complex that not only can I not pronounce it, but I can’t even type it! He’s been very dedicated to the Inspired To Action site and has written some incredibly interesting interviews.

These four people are making The 40 Day Fast happen, they’re doing a great job and I’m profoundly thankful for each of them.

Your Turn To Brag

Have you thought about something to brag about yet?

A weird talent? Famous uncle? Sixth toe?

Please tell us about it in the comments!

And while you’re at it, post a link below to one of your favorite blog posts or if you can’t pick one, just to your blog in general (as long as it’s family friendly.)

Gee, thanks Kat.  Yes, my spreadsheet-fu is great.  You should see my graph-fu - spectacular.  But I could never be a ninja.  Alas, my joints often sound like a bowl of Rice Krispies and sneaking up on someone is thus impossible.

OK, so yes, I’m coming in on the last day.  Think of me as that weird guy with the guitar that comes in on the last day of camp to sing “Friends”.

Coolest thing I’ve ever done:  shooting an M16 at a firing range in Tikrit, Iraq.  I’ve been to some cool places.  (I would not consider Iraq to be one of them! It’s hot, it’s dusty.  Kind of like Texas!) South Africa, Australia, and the UK come to mind. But what made our Iraq trip was getting to meet so many great people and try to bring a little bit of hope and encouragement.

For the post of mine I like best, I linked to my post for last year’s 40 Day Fast.  Sometimes I get the feeling that I am overly dramatic in my more serious posts, maybe even a little full of myself.  But rereading this one for the first time in months, my own words brought me to tears - reminding me who I am, who I want to be, why I am here, why I do what I do.  A good reminder heading into this years 40DF.

I coached my oldest son in middle school soccer for 3 years.  His mom and I aren’t together, and it was great to be able to have that extra time with him.  I wouldn’t trade that experience for the world.

I found myself in the middle of a major fraud a couple of years ago.  I discovered during an audit that three guys stole $4 million from my client.

I had to reconstruct the books and take some very tough stands on reporting to the IRS.  During that, I issued a 1099-Misc to each thief for his share of the $4 million.

Shockingly, they challenged this with the IRS. This resulted in an immediate audit of the company and all three thieves.  (it turns out money from embezzlement is self-employment income?)

After months of grilling (not the food type) and harsh words being thrown around (not by me) and literally dolly-loads of documents, we received a “no-change” report back from the IRS.  During the wait, I was really nervous, and full of self-doubt.

This is one the biggest moments of my professional career.  I am a hero to my client, and the thieves are in jail.

And in the back of my mind, I hear my grandfather speak: “ever now and then even a blind hog finds an acurn.”

Aww, thanks, Kat!  I think you’re pretty cool, too, not least because when you see a problem, you do something about it.

As for bragging, I was a contestant on the Price is Right while Bob Barker was still the host, and I think that’s unspeakably cool.  smile

I’m posting an essay I wrote my last semester in college, for Global Studies, this was part of my senior thesis, which was a combination of several essays we wrote over the course of the semester.  I was really fired up about this issue and it turned out to be the my best essay of the semester. I’m proud of it =) Check it out.

After seeing Sara Groves in concert last week (and writing about it on the Rabbit Room), I went back and reread a post I wrote based on Sara’s song “Every Minute”.  It’s still one of my favorite things I’ve written.

Oh, and something to brag about?  A week after I turned 16, I was hired as the afternoon disc jockey for a Christian radio station in town.  It was still when all my friends and I loved Adventures in Odyssey, and I thought it was the coolest thing that I got to say “you’re listening to WDYN.  The time is 4:00.  And now, stay tuned for Adventures in Odyssey.”

I cut all High Fructose Corn Syrup out of our family’s diet. It was hard, but now I feel like we can accomplish anything!

In my head, I have this great singing voice. In reality, I can barely keep a tune. It took many years for me to admit this. Sadly, I’ll never be the singer in the band. However, I do love music. I’ve determined that some people were meant to be musicians, and some people were meant to be fans. I am a good fan. grin Seriously, I have decided to try and be supportive of the musicians who sacrifice so much to follow God’s difficult path for them.

I wrote this post on the Downhere website awhile ago. If you follow a couple of pages later, Jason Germain commented on my post and what it meant to him, the band, their families, and even the label. My story was put in the Downhere newsletter.

I am thrilled to have been able to use my writing skills to thank the musicians whose music continually inspires me.

Sorry I have not been around and posting on your comments. I read daily, but life has been nutty with our two kiddos needing so much medical attention lately.

Hmm, cool thing I have done? I have done so many. Let’s see, I out shot my highly trained police officer husband with his own guns. That was really cool. The coolest part is, he was proud of me and tells others about it.

I had two children. You can’t get much cooler than that.

I tried foods that grossed me out at the mere thought of them, but I tried them anyway. (eel sushi and alligator)

I am 2 belts from being a black belt in American Martial Arts.

I can disarm a man with a gun 5 different ways (though I pray I never have to attempt to use that skill).

Awww… thanks Kat!  We wouldn’t be such great ninjas without our sense’ (spelling?) Kat!
