The Big Reveal

The project that I’ve been working on for a couple of months now is finally live. It’s a rather complex site for Shaun Groves a musician/blogger/writer.

It was a huge project to work on, especially since I just work during naptimes and after the girls go to bed, but it was certainly the most fun project I’ve worked on. Shaun really has a lot of vision for the site and it’s been fun the past couple of days seeing people using and enjoying the forums and the blogs.

I’m rather excited about the site because it’s very interactive and interconnected. Readers can comment on any of the three blogs featured on the site, or they can share their own thoughts in the forums. In addition, there are forum excerpts on all the blogs, so hopefully the forums and blogs will be very interconnected and active. There is also a vault where visitors can download music, lyrics and articles in addition to watch videos and view the photo gallery. Of course, there is an online store with a forthcoming affiliate system. Finally, there is a Tour Page where people can ask questions or make comments about shows and there is also a Shaun Groves Music player that you can listen to while you browse the site. There are also a number of minor features (search, archives, recent info listings...etc) that make the site easy to use.

So that’s some of what I’ve been working on for the past few months. Now, it’s time to catch up on my sleep, Chrismas shopping, book reading and blog writing…

Congratulations! You did a great job. I’ve been checking out the site myself the last couple days…

Did you pick up web design as a hobby and learn for fun, or did you take classes and decide it was something you wanted to do for a living?

Thanks Cristy. It’s really quite fun for me to see you all using the site.

Bekah, actually I started out by taking an online class (which in retrospect was really a poor class) right after my first daughter was born. I wanted to create a web site so that family could stay up to date on all the cute things she was doing. While car shopping we ran across a local dealer whose site needed help. I thought I could do better, so I approached them and they hired me. My clients grew from there. Now, I’m mostly focusing on music clients, simply because that’s where my interests lie.

It’s mostly just a fun hobby that happens to pay well. My primary job is playing with my girls. I do love business, marketing and web stuff, though, so I often have to make a concerted effort not to get too wrapped up in my business. I *try* to limit it to naptime and after bedtime, but sometimes I sit with my girls on the couch and work on my iBook while they watch Sesame Street.... rolleyes

Great job, Kat.

I’m a huge fan of web sites that have everything in plain sight, easily accessible. So of course I’m a big fan of Shaun’s new site. cheese

You can get to anything you want there with one or two clicks, never needing to hunt around for something, or wait while razzle-dazzle dancing widgets show off the designer’s mad Flash animation skillz.

Down with Flash animations!  At least as a web site basis.  I agree with Hammer - way too annoying.

Kat, very nice job on the site.  Accessible, well-coded...it’s all in there.
