“...and whoever welcomes a little child like this in My name welcomes Me.” Matthew 18:5
image Today I am fasting for our Compassion child, Celine, who lives in the Philippines. She is one of six children in the family and she is responsible for carrying water, buying or selling in the market and running errands when needed. She will be seven years old in November and loves to sing, play house and play with her dolls. She regularly attends church activities with her family.

Celine lives in a coastal community which is home to approximately 3,500 residents. The houses are typically wooden floors, grass walls and thatched roofs. The spoken language there is Waray.

The typical diet consists of maize, bananas, chicken, fish, bread, cassava and rice. Most of the adults work as farmers and earn the equivalent of $80.00 a month. The community needs electricity, educational materials and livelihood training.

The climate is usually hot, humid and rainy. The Philippines was once the most developed country in Asia following WW1 but has lagged behind the other countries because of poor economic growth and a widespread perception of corruption. 83% of the country is Catholic.

We haven’t received any correspondence from Celine yet since it has only been two months since we sponsored her. We feel blessed that God has put this on our hearts and are looking forward to watching her grow physically and spiritually and learn more about her and her life in the Philippines with her family. We are praying that she learns about Jesus and how much He loves her and pray that we can assist in helping her learn.

I’ll be praying for you, momma kat.  What you say about the Philippines once being the most developed Asian country is striking, because it is a reminder that all we stand on is not so secure as we may think.  How many missteps are we in the USA away from a downward spiral, leading us to become the needy?  It’s humbling.

I’m mostly a lurker on Shaun’s site, but through it I got interested in this 40 day fast and have not missed a post.  Reading these daily posts has really challenged and changed me.  I have also been blessed to see your comments on all these different sites.  Your encouragement is nice to see, so I thought I would let you know that a total stranger from Phoenix, Arizona thinks you rock! I will surely be praying for you today.

Good post, Mom! And on a great organization. We, too, are sponsoring two children through Compassion - Nabila in Indonesia and Bryan in Venezuela. We were moved to do so by your daughter’s first 40 day fast post (http://www.thesecretlifeofkat.com/site/comments/the_starting_line/), which we got to via Brant Hansen’s blog (http://www.thesecretlifeofkat.com/site/comments/the_40_day_fast_brant_hansen/). Before I was even done weeping I showed those posts to my wife, and before SHE was done crying we were Compassion sponsors. So your daughter is doing a Very Good Thing here, and is making a difference. As I pray to God we all do through this effort.

Take care and God’s blessings,

Jim

Thanks for sharing mom!
My Compassion child lives in the Philippines as well.  Her name is Jen Rina.  I’m fortunate enough to be able to go see her and her family in two weeks...I’m so excited!
Thank you for sharing the important ministry of Compassion and for being a hero for a little girl on the other side of the world.

I have several students from the Philippines who are absolutely lovely and so that country holds a special place in my heart.  I am praying for Celine today and for her community and I hope you get that first letter soon--it’s such a joy!

I’m sorry I am just now commenting...it’s so late in the day.  I have loved all of the pictures and stories of the Compassion children during the 40 Day Fast.  What a sweet picture of Celine - I hope you get a letter soon, also.  And I agree with someone who wrote above that you have a great gift for encouraging others!  It has been a constant during the 40 Day Fast.  Praying for you and for Celine tonight.

what a beautiful little girl. When we sponsored our compassion children we thought we were going to bless them… but we often feel they bless us more than we could ever give them.  It’s such a precious relationship.  I hope you share again.
