Santa’s Creepy

So I ran across this photo gallery of kids freaked out by Santa. I hate to see kids cry, but frankly, this gallery is pretty hilarious.
The way some of the Santa’s look, I think I’d be screaming if someone made me sit with them.
Did you believe in Santa as a child? At what age did you “find out”? What do you (will you) tell your kids about Santa?

Wait a minute. What’s this “find out” business? You’re talking like Santa isn’t real or something. I know a few people who don’t believe in Santa. I pity them.

Now that our oldest is nearing three, we have had to mull this issue fairly seriously. I’d like to teach our children the history of Saint Nicholas and encourage them to give secret Santa gifts as a way to continue the tradition of anonymous giving. This year I want to take my oldest to buy a “secret” gift to put in her little sister’s stocking on Christmas Eve. I guess this approach eliminates some of the magic, but it makes our kids aware of Santa’s place at Christmas and places the emphasis on giving.
We are buying our kids a few gifts for Christmas, but I hope our gift giving habits are much more sparce than our parents. If the season is about giving and gratefulness for Christ, why do we spend so much time, energy and excitement over playthings that Santa brings.
And yet, I had to lose all the excitement of Christmas morning--and I do love to give my kids presents now and then.

Hehe...my dad always hated the idea of Santa Claus, not sure why. My brothers and I never believed in him. In fact, when my younger brother was in kindergarten he got in major trouble because he told all the kids Santa wasn’t real. His teacher wasn’t too happy and neither were the kids’ parents, haha.

I have a picture of my niece somewhere that looks like she’s scared to death on Santa’s lap! My dad IS Santa Claus...or he plays one at Christmas time for family/friend gatherings. And my niece was scared to death of HIM, too, when he was dressed like Santa.
I believed in Santa until maybe 2nd grade or so. Then I had fun keeping the secret from my little brother for the next couple of years. My kids believed until about the same time when they asked point blank, and we came clean. I think if I had it to do over, Santa would never exist for my kids. We would have spent more time, effort and money on giving to those in need, like we do now.
PS Kat, are you getting my emails?
