Parent’s University: Faith

Hi and welcome to another installment of Parent’s University!

How It Works

1. Write a post on the topic of faith (i.e. how you teach your kids about God) - it can be a simple tip, long story or anything else that you think other parents will find useful .

2. Then submit a link to your post* (in the comments or via email) along with the title or a one sentence description of the entry.

I will then post those links here and we will have a nice collection of ideas, tips and suggestions on teaching our kids about God.

*Please do send a link to that specific post and not just your blog in general so that people will still be able to easily access your entry in days and weeks to come.

I posted recently on faith in relation to others and how to instill this in your children.  No answers but a lot of questions!  At least the commenters had some cool things to say.  =)

When the kiddos were small we used to keep it as simple as possible.  I attempted to do things that fell in line with thier ability to reason at whatever age they were at.

1. Take them to church and other church-related functions and teach them this is also thier family and why

2. Pray before meals

3. Play Praise / CCM music in the house: I was amazed at how this affected thier mood

4. Play kid praise music they can sing to: Bullfrogs & Butterflies (I just dated myself), and there was another the kids loved by a lady whose name I cannot remember called “Go to The Ant” (very cute and memorable)

5. Pray as a family in the evening, and let the kids pray, it teaches them how.

6. Address deaths from a faith perspective:  Paupau is in heaven with Jesus now, and here is how we make sure we get to meet him there, etc.

7. Share / point out God’s hand in nature with the kids

8. Let them talk about God when they want to. I was amazed at the things my kids said to me.

There are likely lots more good things that I could have done.  I wish I would have had one of these here blog thingys back then.  We kind of had to wing it back in the day.

Hi Kat,

I just wanted to tell you I love the idea behind what you’re doing.  But my child is only a baby - 13 months old - and we’ve just begun the whole parenting thing.  Unless you’re talking about infant care, I feel like I’m out of my league in writing a post.  But I really like what you’re doing and am reading along.

I wanted to share a true story on this topic. I titled it: Faith Like A Child.

Kat, I just wanted to say that I LOVE that you’re hosting this.  It is really interesting to read what everyone has to say.

Also, since you asked, I’d love to share some of the memory verses we’ve used (and maybe the situations that we use them in?) with our kids.  I’ll post a link back here when I do write it.
