This is an area that I really want to improve, but here are a few things we do to teach our kids about God:
1. Bible Study
We have a devotion book that I like to do with the girls in the morning. I go in spurts of being consistent about it, but it’s definitely something I want to work on this year. We read a story, a verse and pray. It’s simple, but right now I just want to help them develop the habit.
My oldest daughter has Bible Verses she has to memorize for school and we all practice the verses in the car, so my 3 year old learns them too. I’d like to do more memorization, so that whenever there are discipline issues we can turn to a specific verse in the Bible as our foundation.
2. Prayer
Everyday on the way to school we pray for each other. We pray at bedtime and mealtime. Whenever we hear a siren we pray for the doctors and the people who are hurt. We pray before our meals. We pray after timeouts or any episodes of correction.
When I get grumpy or frustrated (which is far too often...) I ask my girls to pray for me. They pray the sweetest little prayers and I’m usually feeling better by the time they say Amen. I’m glad they get to see that I need help sometimes and that when I need help I turn to Jesus.
3. Church
We attend an absolutely amazing church. It’s the sole (pun intended) reason we moved back to Waco. The girls love to attend church on Sundays and our small group meetings (called Lifegroups) during the week. It’s here that they’re learning what it means to live in community and worship corporately.
4. Me
I need to study the Word, pray and worship more openly and more often. The more they see me seeking Jesus, the more they’ll want to also.

I loved how my wife would just blurt out prayers for people in the middle of cooking dinner. She would get the kids to pray with her, and when everyone said amen, they got a cookie.
Its amazing how much you mommies can affect the little ones. I sometimes felt cheated.
Great ideas Kat.

those are such great things to do! The devotional in the morning sounds like something I’d like to make a habit.

Deemus,
Thanks for the kinds and encouraging words. It’s great to have input from someone who is farther down the parenting road.
Brandon,
We use a book called God and Me - Devotions for Girls. It’s simple, but I like it.
Kristin,
I’m definitely still in the process of making it a habit. It’s been harder now that The Small Person is in school. The mornings seem so rushed…
