Parent’s University: Theme Verses for Our Kids

One thing I’ve always wanted to do is to have a “Theme Verse” that I pray for my kids, but I’ve, honestly, never really taken the time to pray about it or look for one.
So a few weeks ago I sat down with the sole intention of searching the scriptures for a passage that exemplifies what I pray and trust God will do in the lives of my children.
I found it in Philipians 1: 9-11:
“And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ - to the glory and praise of God.”
Sometimes I get distracted as a parent. I think that school, friends and the busy-ness of life are more important than they really are and I let them take up more time than they should.
This verse is a constant reminder of the values and character that I’m working to instill in the three small people that I love so dearly.

It’s not an over-arching theme, but I’m clinging to this one as my hope. Isa 54:13
“All your children will be taught by the Lord, and great shall be the peace of your children.”

Our church gives each baby a verse at their baby dedications. It’s a neat gift to the parents, although the summer I was the youth & children’s intern, I realized what an awesome responsibility it is to choose a verse for a child’s life.

"you will be blessed going in, blessed going out, ... and the promise will be for your children, and your children’s children for all generations...”

Last year in a hard time for my family, my husband asked us our favorite word from scripture. We picked words like kindness, righteousness, perseverance, justice. He selected verse for each of us, framed them, and hung them in all our rooms. Then we had friends over who prayed room to room based on the scripture over every family member. It was precious and from time to time, I visit my children’s room and pray those scriptures for them still.

What a great idea Truevyne. I love the idea of framing it - to keep it always in front of us. I do always love hearing your wisdom on parenthood…
