MySpace: Out With The New, In With The Old

According to a recent press release by ComScore, a digital media measurement company, over half of the users of MySpace are over the age of 35.

“An analysis of visitors to MySpace.com shows that as the site has experienced dramatic visitor growth, it has become more popular among older Internet users.  The most significant shift has occurred among teens 12-17, who accounted for 24.7 percent of the MySpace audience in August 2005, but today represent a much lower 11.9 percent of the site’s total audience.  Conversely, Internet users between the ages of 35-54 now account for 40.6 percent of the MySpace visitor base, an 8.2 percentage point increase during the past year.”

And I thought I was one of the oldest people to have a MySpace page, but as it turns out I’m one of the young whipper snappers. I think this is a very interesting report. I’d be interested to see if there are other studies done to back it up because the ramifications of an aging MySpace userbase could be very significant.

I saw that one over on Slashdot, and thought about blogging it myself.  But yeah, the only “younger” people on my MySpace friends list is my 14 y/o son and 20 y/o niece.  Everybody else is 30’s and 40’s.  As aesthetically offensive as some of those layouts are, I have to admit it’s a pretty cool way to connect with others of similar interests.

BTW, nice blog you’ve got here.  I’m impressed that the layout is your own!

Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment, Rick.

I was actually surprised by the research. I admit I don’t hang out there much, for many reasons, but I was really under the assumption that mostly 20 somethings, teens and a few tech saavy older folk used myspace. I suppose that’s why I found the report so interesting. I wonder how it will affect the direction and perception of MySpace.
