My Shin Kicking List is Growing (Warning: Movie Spoiler)

image A dear friend of mine recommended the movie The Ultimate Gift for our date night.

3/4 of the way through the movie, surrounded by a mountain of tissues, squinting through puffy red eyes and trying not to make any sound while I cried, I vowed to kick her in the shins the next time I see her.

Learn from her mistakes. Here’s a simple rule to follow when recommending a movie to parents:

Parents of small children don’t want to watch movies about small children who die.

You’d think that would be obvious.

Apparently not.

But she’s a good friend, so I’ll just do a small kick.

I didn’t care for that flick.  I wrote a pretty nasty review of it and got in trouble with the people that paid for my movie.

For my taste, it was Velveta by the pound.

Yeah, Anna doesn’t like to watch ANY movie that is too much like the bad things that happen to you (or CAN happen to you) in real life.
That’s why it’s best to stick with guy movies instead of chick movies.
By the way, do you know the difference between a chick flick and a guy flick?
In a chick flick, one person dies really slowly. In a guy flick, lots of people die really fast. smile
Hey Kat, by the way...did you get the email I sent you about our Christmas song? Just wondering…

I haven’t seen this one, but the funny thing is that a friend WITHOUT kids recommended it to us a while back.  Guess she didn’t know the rule either!

OK Kat. I just found your website via ... I have no idea, and I forgot my bread crumbs today). And I just spent way too much time poking around. I’ll be back.

But here is where I leave my two cents. Because really, I couldn’t agree more to this post.

My sister—who should have known better—recommended that I watch “Pay It Forward” a few years back. She was startled I hadn’t seen it when it came out in the theaters.

I watched it. Sobbed. Got furious.

My firstborn was less than a year old. I didn’t care how beautiful the life lesson. Helen Hunt had just lost her baby, and no one could bring him back.

Horrible movie. Horrible!

I don’t trust her movie recommendations anymore. She likes to cry too much.

Busy Little Bee and Amy H.,
It’s good to know it’s not just me!

Seth,
It was a bit cheesy, but I usually don’t mind that so much. Why did someone pay for your movie?

Paul,
That’s a hilarious (and true) distinction between chick flicks and guy movies.

I did get your email....thanks!

Erin,
I remember reading that book as a girl. I think I kicked someone in the shins for recommending it.

Lisa H,
I’m glad I could save you from the misery.

Kelly,
Oh....that’s the worst. I watched that movie before I even had kids and I was worthless by the time it was over. Sob city. I can’t imagine watching that with an infant son!

Thanks so much for stopping by! I’m glad you looked around and took the time to comment.  I hope to see you around often!

Its rough to watch those movies where bad things happen to kids.  It makes my blood boil.

But I do have a great movie for you Kat:
Cry Freedom is the story of Steven Boko in South Africa.  Its a true story equivalent of Mississippi Burning.  A story of how Steven worked to overcome the racism in SA.  Very moving.

Chuck,
It’s a hypothetical list. I don’t typically ACTUALLY kick people in the shins. grin

you should
it feels good to give em a bruise to remember you by and why you did it so they remember not to do what they did....
does that make sense? LOL....
