My Favorite Song Lyrics: Martyrs and Thieves

One of my favorite song lyrics comes from a song called Martyrs and Thieves by Jennifer Knapp.

In the absence of martyrs, there’s a presence of thieves who only want to rob you blind.

image Now, it may seem like a rather morbid line at first, but I find it deeply inspiring.

So often, we feel the need to communicate perfection. As though we’re little billboards for Jesus and if we look perfect enough maybe someone will “buy” him.

But we’re not supposed to be billboards for Jesus. We’re supposed to be his hands and feet.

When we create the illusion that we’ve got it all together, it opens a crack in the lives of those around us. A crack in which lies can flow. Lies that say things like:

“Look, he’s got it all together. What’s wrong with you? You must not love God like you say you do or your life would be perfect like his.”

“God wouldn’t want me. I’m not good enough.”

“I must be a really bad person, because no one else seems to deal with what I’m dealing with.”

When we’re willing to be martyrs and admit our imperfection, we’re stopping that flow of lies.

There is great power in honesty, vulnerability and pain. It makes us transparent so that people can see the God who saved us.

I love this song, too!  What ever happened to Jennifer Knapp? Did she fall off the face of the earth?
