I have a confession
I really like Kelly Clarkson.
And the Dixie Chicks.
Think what you may of my musical tastes…
Maybe it’s that they both have a bit of attitude.
Or maybe I honestly just like the music.
I think “Since U Been Gone” is an awesome (somewhat bitter) song that I love to play loudly when I’m by myself in the car minivan.
I’ve never seen the Dixie Chicks perform “Not Ready To Make Nice” without an incredible amount of intensity. I love their music and harmonies...I honestly just think they’re really good.
So here are my two favorite slightly-angst-filled songs:
Since U Been Gone - Kelly Clarkson
(Disclaimer: I’m not endorsing anyone’s political views here, just saying I like the music.)
Anyone else like either of these songs?

I have always had a fondness for the music of the Dixie Chicks, because they are some girls with major spunk, a quality I admire. I have put aside a lot of my secular music since I’ve had kids, but I still love their sound - they truly make beautiful music.

I love Kelly Clarkson! I don’t necessarily think of her as a guilty pleasure.
I’m not much of a fan of the Dixie Chicks, though.

Karen,
Yes. Spunk. I think that’s partly why I like both of them.
Amy,
Well, I usually like deep, thought provoking, singer/songwriter types - so Kelly Clarkson is a bit of a pop indulgence.

I actually love that Dixie Chicks song, the only song of theirs I have ever listened to, I think. Good choice.

The DC’s last album was incredible and “Since You’ve Been Gone” is one of the best songs I’ve ever heard! If you’re a musician or a song writer, you HAVE to appreciate the borderline perfection of “SYBC” - you can analyze it to death and it’s still just about perfect…

Not really a fan of either - but also have never really heard their music. by most accounts, the Dixie Chicks are pretty good (notwithstanding their political positions). Of course, how many musicians over the years have not taken some sort of political stance?

I too, like the Chicks. I saw them in concert several, {or is it many by now} years ago and they put on a great show. I don’t much listen to Kelly Clarkson, but I don’t judge you because you do

I just can’t get enough of cool dad’s side project. Here’s my guilty pleasure:

Be ready to get hooked on the best music you’ve EVER heard. Or would it be NEVER heard?
I will second the vote for Kelly Clarkson--awesome! We had a big party for cool dad’s 30th and this was one of the songs that got everybody out to the dance floor (surprisingly).

Kat, yeah me too. but she’s not as bad as some other pop indulgences.

I love the spunky chick singer. I have 6 daughters, so I tend to steer them to singers that have a little backbone, so they can see a strong example.
I love Sarah Kelley. She came to our church last year, and my girls loved her music. She signed CD’s and spoke with my 5th & 6th grade girls. If you have never listened to her you should give her a chance. She is best listened to at high volume levels. “Out of the reach of Yesterday” is my fav.
Kelly is also one of my favorites. I guess some of the American Idol (which I love) holdover, and also the local girl makes good thing.
I had every Dixie Chick CD when the “thing” happened. If that had happened here in the states, it might not have been a big deal. But being in a foreign country it just hit me the wrong way.
I became part of the “Country don’t like you no more” folks, and sent dozens of emails protesting radio play of thier songs. I also destroyed the CD’s I owned.
I have done that with others too. I refuse to listen to Ozzie, Rush, Rob Zombie and a few others in spite of liking thier music, due to thier stances on various things, like lovin’ the devil, etc.

Kat,
I got an email from you on Saturday that I replied to, but didn’t get any others...did you get my reply?
Feb 11, 08 at 03:59 pm
Amy,
I didn’t. Could you resend it?
Feb 11, 08 at 05:54 pm
Kat,
I sent you another one. If you don’t get that, I’ll try from my gmail address. I hope everyone has enjoyed reading this conversation!

I love Kelly Clarkson!
I do NOT like the dixie chicks. phff.
My friends and i protested the Grammy’s last night after last year...the dixie chicks beating out Justin Timberlake numerous times for an old album not worthy of winning.
Ok, i’ll off my soapbox now

I love SYBG! That song just has so much energy behind it. Even if you’ve never experienced anything to bring out those feelings or words, you wanna sing along loudly… At least, I do.

Great post. I totally agree that these are my guilty pleasures (and sadly very high on my most listened to songs on my iPod), yet I would never list either artist as one of my favorites. Another song in this category for me is “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield.

"Here’s Where The Story Ends,” by The Sundays. It’s shrill, extremely repetitive and certain friends have been known to run screaming/shrieking from the room whenever I play it.
