Music Monday: Gatlin Elms Band - CD Giveaway
Posted on 03.02.08 in Music Monday Music and there are 13 comments.
Occasionally, on Music Monday, I’ll feature an indie artist that I really like. I’ll post an interview and giveaway a free cd.
This is one of those occasions. Brandon Marler introduced me to the Gatlin Elms Band on one of the first Music Mondays and I’ve been enjoying their music ever since.
The Gatlin Elms Band
They are fronted by a young man named (shockingly) Gatlin Elms and they hail from Houston, Texas. Their album “The Oceans and the Stars” was produced by Robbie Seay.
The Song
Listen to their song “All We Need” while you read the rest of the post.
The Interview
Anyway, here is my interview with Gatlin. At the end of the interview are the details on that CD Giveaway…
1. Introduce us to the Gatlin Elms Band.
Well, I’m Gatlin. I do the singing/songwriting in the band.
Along with me there is Michael Doughty, more commonly known as Mike D. on the pianos. Mike and I have been playing together since our High School years in Student Ministry worship and slowly started to form the music we’re playing today.
Along with Mike and myself we have started playing with some great new friends and solid musicians. Neil Sandoz plays bass, Tigh Holmstrom plays drums, and various guitars players consist of Taylor Johnson, Justin Bogart, and Tim Dillon.
2. How long have you been writing music?
I have been playing/ writing music for a little over 5 years now and I think I’m becoming addicted with every song.
3. What inspires you to write? What is inspiring you right now?
I have always been inspired or motivated by how important i think i am or could be on my own, but in truth every time I try living by my own accord or even writing for myself I get nowhere and realize I have nothing to offer that will last, except through the blood of Christ.
4. What are your hobbies outside of music?
I like to go driving with friends and play my brothers Super Nintendo when I get the chance.
When driving at night, I really like to stop at red lights with a cheesy 80’s song or dance beat blazing and dance like there’s no tomorrow. It really freak’s out the people sitting beside you at the red light.
I would also like to learn how to carve fishing lures when i grow up. So if you know how to do that shoot me an email.
5. What artists are you listening to?
Right now I am testing out the new Radiohead album, but I usually have Josh Ritter, Death Cab, or Keane playing in my car.
6. What indie artists do you recommend?
Will Stratton, Sleeping at Last, and Jaymay are all off the chain.
7. What are your primary methods of promoting your music?
Myspace, friends, posters, stickers, and shows.
8. How many 5 year olds could you take in a fight?
I used to be a wrestler so depending on the day i could probably take 10 to 15 at a time. As long as their not like the body building kid on the Discovery Channel.
9. If you could have a theme song play behind you every time you entered a room, what would it be and why?
The drum intro of “In the Air Tonight” by the man, the legend, Phil Collins. It would be cool if the music started in sync with me opening the door. But I’m usually late so it could turn out to be a disaster.
10. If you were a super hero, what would your super power be? cape or no cape?
I would definitely be a super hero that could turn into a fighter jet or a motorcycle. Fighter jets don’t need capes, so I guess it would be cool if I had one just for looks.

Okay, Kat...there are several irony’s here!
1.) i’m working on the laptop, listening to Gatlin Elms on iTunes, and your post pops up in my email/RSS reader!
2.) my wife and a friend saw Gatlin (and another great indie band, “Evangeline”...also produced by Robbie Seay), this past Thursday in concert.
3.) i’m the first person to leave a comment, and i left the link/review of them on you New Music Monday blog!
*weird, irony, odd, strange...it’s just plain late!!*
i’m really glad you liked them!! Gatlin is an amazing guy (with some serious depth in his lyrics!), and his band and the artists he shares stage and studio with (i.e., Taylor Johnson), are amazing in their own rite!

I will have to make my contribution to Music Monday today, since I could not get in yesterday.
No music offered, but a tidbit of interesting info offered.
For those familiar with Larry Norman’s music, you might know his song called “Why don’t you look into Jesus.” I read an interview yesterday and he spoke of his inspiration for that song.
He was on stage singing for the group “People” back in the sixties when he looked offstage and saw Janis Joplin. She was drunk, and had a bottle of Southern Comfort in one hand, and a paper cup in the other. These lyrics were born:
Sipping whiskey from a paper cup,
You drown your sorrows till you can’t stand up,
Take a look at what you’ve done to yourself,
Why don’t you put the bottle back on the shelf,
Yellow fingers from your cigarettes,
Your hands are shaking while your body sweats,
Why don’t you look into Jesus, He’s got the answer
I will always see that song differently now.
That is all.
