My Ticket Master Trauma
I recently bought tickets to a concert that will feature this artist. So cool.
What wasn’t cool was the fact that the tickets were $11 and TicketMaster charged a $7 “convenience” fee. What?!
I think all stores should charge a convenience fee. After all, they did have to pay for their building so that I can come buy their stuff. I should be thankful they made it so “convenient.”
Actually, I think I’m going to start implementing a “convenience” charge for reading my blog. I mean, it’s about time. Sheesh. Nothing’s free people. It’s time I get mine.
Well, to soften the $7 blow, TicketMaster sent me a couple free songs from iTunes. It was the old “we’re-going-to-overcharge-you-so-we-give-you-free-stuff-and-make-it-look-like-we-didn’t-rip-you-off-ploy.”
Yeah, that one.
It worked.
I was pretty excited about my free $7 songs.
Yo-Yo
So, I went a-searchin’ for music on iTunes. I’ve been wanting more classical music because I’m getting old and that’s what old people listen to. I ended up buying a couple songs by Yo-Yo Ma and I didn’t realize that I get an extra bonus by buying Yo-Yo Ma’s music.
Not only do I get gorgeous, relaxing music to rock to in my rocking chair while watching the Price is Right, I also can entertain my kids for a good five minutes every time they ask who’s playing.
George Costanza’s Long Lost Twin
Seriously, what a cool name. Perhaps we’ll name our next kid something like that (and NO we are NOT expecting….that was a hypothetical statement.)
Here is a video of Yo-Yo Ma playing with Itzhak Perlman.
At about :28 I think it’s pretty clear and Perlman and George Costanza are one in the same…

Kat,
Honestly, I would pay a “convenience fee” for all of the encouragement and inspiration that your bolg has offered me. Just because your blog is free does not mean there is not a payment coming to you for your kingdom building words. Your reward is in heaven. Thanks for all you do!

Kat,
Sarcasm fits well with you.
Just don’t let it steal your joy away.
I think its ok if TicketMaster charges a ‘convenience fee.’ They have to pay the guys who stand in line at the theater to buy the tickets. Then, they have to make a buck.
Also, thanks for posting that Ma, Perlman performance. Not only was the music great, those two visually interact with each other and the conductor as if they were singing the song.
Yours in Christ,
Chris Livingstone.

I’m not a huge fan of convenience fees either, but I am a huge fan of convenience...being American and all.
At least you can print your tickets and then just go. And it’s Brooke Fraser!!!!!! Will we have another blog interview?

Perlman and Ma are definitely not just for old people, just edgercaited folk who like music with more than 4 chords. Seriously, some of their biggest fans that I know are still in high school and junior high.
I probably like Vivaldi’s Four Seasons best, but perhaps that’s because it has an interesting name, unlike say Bach’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra in E Major. I’m shallow like that. Classical music may itself be splendid and nuanced, but the names they give most pieces are totally boring.

Sorry about your $7 ‘convenience fee’. Yo-Yo’s a good choice for classical music. My favorite classical songs are “Pachelbel’s Canon”, “Adagio for Strings” by Barber and I love soundtrack themes including George Costanza’s look-alike on “Theme from Schindler’s List” and also “The English Patient” by Gabriel Yared and “Shakespeare In Love” by Stephen Warbeck.

That George Costanza observation is right on!
One of my favorite classical works is The Planets by Gustav Holst. Particularly Jupitar, but Mars is cool too.

I have a friend who met Yo-Yo Ma and Bobby McFerrin in high school (at the Texas State Choir concert, and the convention that went along with it). Always been a fan of his work, and pairing him with Perlman is great.
Sarah, I love Holst’s The Planets. Both Jupiter and Mars are standouts.
Kat, I linked to some real free music on my post today.

My all-time favorite classical music is Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. I could listen to that for hours and hours.
I wrote about some music that definitely has nostalgia attached to it for me.

I’ve met both individuals and they are just great people.
Perlman was a Rice a few times and he sent his daughter to school there while I was teaching theory and ear training. Poor guy, he’s in a wheel chair now because of the Polio but he is still kicking it on stage, however, he plays in agonizing pain.
His fees are pretty incredible. To show up and play is well into the 6 figures. He played a Rice for practically free though because his daughter is there!
Perlman is one of my favorite violinists. I like Yo Yo but I prefer some of the old-school Cellists over him. He is pretty darn entertaining in concert though.
Favorite Perlman recording is of the Sibelius Violin Concerto.

$7??? Wow. That’s just awful.
Dvorak: Symphony No. 9, Movement II, Largo
I love the way it makes me feel.
Everyone on Twitter is tweeting about food. Someone even brought up Chipotle, my favorite. Hmmm.

You are very lucky to see Brooke Fraser for $7 or $18.
She is wonderful. Deciphering Me and Shadow Feet are wonderful. Also the C.S. Lewis Song (happens to be one of my favorite authors). Enjoy the show! Don’t let Ticketgouger.com get you down.
