No Lyrics. No Music.
I remember as a kid, complaining every time my grandmother took my Amy Grant tape out of the tape player (a travesty in and of itself) and turned the radio to the classical station.
“That’s not music. There aren’t any words...”
I’m a lyrics girl.
If a song has lame lyrics, I can’t listen to it. No matter how good the music is.
Now that I’m older, I do enjoy classical music and I even enjoy music performed in other languages, but if a song is in English and one line ends with “heart” and the next one ends with “we’ll never be apart...”
I throw up a little bit.
So, what about you? Are lyrics or music most important to you?
In Music News: Big Week For Third Day
It’s been a big week for blogger Mark Lee. He and his wife Stephanie had a little girl on Friday, on Tuesday morning Third Day’s new album Revelation will release and on Tuesday night they’ll perform on The Tonight Show.
The Tonight Show. How cool is that?
So, be sure to get yourself a copy of Revelation and tune in Tuesday night to watch Third Day’s performance.
Here’s a sneak peek of the album:

I am also a lyrics girl. BUT I can listen to some catchy songs with bad lyrics as I’ve written in a previous music Monday post.
I just love words. I love unique ways of putting words together and admire someone who can effectively deliver a message with beautiful and unique words in the short time span of a song. But add some pretty music and that message sticks a little better, I think.
I can listen to music without lyrics, though, totally.

Good lyrics are a big plus for music. If the song has mediocre lyrics, I tend to tune them out and listen to the instruments behind them. If the playing or basic melody is poor, in addition to the lyrics, then the song does not stay on.
But I love instrumental music, classical or modern, that showcases the players ability to make art without words. A couple of my favorite groups (for example, Rush and Nickel Creek) always include an instrumental song or two on every album, which are absolutely amazing to listen to.

Good lyrics! All the way…
In fact, when people ask me what kind of music I like, I tell them, “Good music.” And then they want more info, so I say, “I like songs that have good lyrics to them.”
I can enjoy a variety of styles of music, but I can’t go for bad or vulgar lyrics.

It’s a one two punch for me. Love great music...still wishing I could find a track from a Bollywood film of major drums. Those crazy producers thought Americans only wanted the songs from the movie- not the filler drum music.
And yes, lyrics are everything. I almost keeled over getting my hair cut a few weeks ago when I noticed the lyrics to the peppy song the hairdresser was singing as she snipped, something about kissing a girl and liking it sung by another girl?? Pullleeasseee.

I like lyrics that are well pronounced and easy to understand.....does that make me less deep?

It’s a Catch-22 for me. If the music is great and the lyrics are wretched I won’t listen. If the lyrics are great and the music is uninspired I can’t listen.

I’d say I’m mostly into lyrics, such as Sara Groves, Derek Webb & Todd Agnew who really challenge me and hook me with their lyrics. However, I also like instrumental music, like “Life In Technicolor” by Coldplay, and “Reset” by MuteMath and also soundtrack music like “Gladiator”, “Braveheart” and “LOST”. I also like obscure lyrics like Radiohead’s “Reckoner”.

Hey, what a fun post. I love all of these songs!

that’s a good question… I think I’m more of a lyrics person, but the music has to be good too. I used to love classical music as a kid. I even wrote on a post it to my dad that I would only listen to classical music my whole life, and never listen to rap, and then signed my name. ha ha…

RE: Lyrics vs. music? I have to say that I have to like the music first. My lyric pet peeve: rhyming love with above. Please, no!
RE: Third Day - Some friends of mine and I went to the taping of the Tonight Show. The show itself stunk (the subject matter of the interviews was pretty crude & caused a bit of a stir on the Third Day boards), but Third Day performed really well.

I am a composition guy. Being a bass player, I usually listen to the chord progression and the harmony. When others sing along with the singer, I usually ‘sing’ the bass line and try to hear the progression. An instrumental song gives me more freedom to interpret its story. Still, I like great lyrics.
