Look At What I Found On My Daughter’s Pillow…

Please do not judge my parenting abilities based on this picture. I had nothing to do with it.

She’s amazing all by herself.

The Small Person (6) is somewhat addicted to reading the Bible. She reads it in the car. She reads it while her sister and brother are playing outside. She reads it when going to bed and when she wakes up. She reads it out loud to us.

She reads it every single day.

She loves it.

She inspires me.

Question for You

Honestly, I never read the Bible as often as I wanted to until last year when I started having my daily reading emailed to me. That simple change has helped me to be much more consistent.

Do you read your Bible as often as you’d like?  Do you have tips to help others who want to dig in but don’t know where to start?

Your daughter is precious!!

Where do you get your daily reading from? I need to have it emailed to me. I used to read my Bible daily (except for Saturdays) until I had kids, basically. My friend emails out a daily scripture verse and has for over 7 years. I’ve been trying to get something that will come to my inbox that I can do whenever I have time throughout the day. Please let me know where you get your daily reading from.

I’ve had season in my life where I’ve read the Bible a lot and season where it was not so much.

I think one thing that helped me was that I went to a church that gave study questions for preparing for the next week’s sermon.  Now, I have a church that gives questions to follow up.  That gives a place to start or something to come back to when I’m just not sure where to go.

But as far as attitude toward it.  I find that I have more desire and enjoyment when I’ve prepared my heart with consistent prayer.  I ask God to make my heart hungry for Him.  When I then turn to His Word, I find that I’m more able to see who God is and how incredible he is, whether that’s through a narrative of delivering his people from Egypt or through a Pauline epistle that discusses the power God has given me personally for what I’m in right now.

For me, “success” in reading comes from acknowledging and embracing that my act of reading is nothing without God’s Spirit working in me before, during, and after.  It is He that draws me to the Bible.

That is so sweet, Kat.

I struggle with daily Bible reading.  Last year was great because I had a one year Bible and stuck to the schedule (or played catch up if I missed a day), but now that I don’t have any structure, I am having a hard time being consistent.  How did you get your daily reading emailed to you?  That sounds cool.

I love that she’s started so young!  What a great habit to form early on.  My oldest daughter reads often, but not quite every day.  I’ve found that having the ‘Holy Bible’ app on my iPhone helps alot.  It has daily readings and where you can switch translations if you are having a problem understanding it in the one you are reading.

WidneyWoman,
I’m using this site to get my daily reading emailed to me - http://studylight.org/

I just found it via google. I’ve heard you can do the same thing through YouVersion.

Sarah,
Wise, wise words, my friend.

Marla,
I tell you, they could be BFF’s if we didn’t live a million miles apart. grin

Erin,
The site I’m using - http://studylight.org/ is sending me the read through the Bible in 2 years plan. Because I’m an underachiever.

Seriously, though, I love the structure of reading through the Bible. It really helps me to be consistent.

Joyce,
Thanks!

Jess,
An app? You’re speaking my love language. I’m always looking for new apps. Thanks for the tip!

Kat, I rarely comment BUT I love your twitter updates and posts. I wanted you to know this post really blessed me!Just know there’s a lady in Oregon (to be clear, me) praying that your daughter’s love for God’s word will continue to grow, strengthen, and evolve into an outpouring of the Holy Spirit. That little girl has a destiny!

I really feel your daughter does indeed have God’s hand on her in a special way.  I would be both thrilled and terrified if I were you.

That picture took my breath away.

What sweet, innocent devotion.

My Bible reading is inadequate these days. I have some verses laminated and hanging on my shower wall (I make a new one every year or so), so I always have that. It’s great to really learn a passage and mediate on its wisdom over a period of time.

But I also just signed up for your Bible reading program. I love that it comes to my In Box every day. I have a feeling that will motivate me.

That is so precious, and not the least bit surprising given what she was up to while we were chatting last week.  Speaking of, I’ve been meaning to write all week to say how much fun it was to meet you, Small, and Smaller!

Like Sarah, I’ve gone (and still go) through stages of consistent Bible reading and not-so-consistent Bible reading.  I’ve learned to not beat myself up about the inconsistent reading periods, because I find that in those times, all the scripture memory I was forced smile to do as a child comes back and I sometimes end up meditating in more depth on the words hidden in my heart.  Sometimes thinking about just one first for days or weeks on end helps me to grow more than reading a chapter a day or whatever.  That’s not a good plan, but it is amazing how God keeps working even when I don’t work so hard.

Kat, I would LOVE to have God’s word emailed to me daily!  I think that would really help me to stay plugged in…

I visited the site, and I can only find the One Year plan; how do I find a Two Year plan?

I love the One Year Bible in the NKJV.  I write all over it.  I am in my second year, and it is interesting to see my last year’s comments and markings of what stood out to me.

Generally, I can say that God is speaking to me everyday through the discipline of reading His word, but I trust that even when something like that is not obvious that in truth something is transpiring within me that I may or may not comprehend at the time.

An excellent book to encourage a personal devotional life is The Only Necessary Thing by Henri Nouwen.

He helped me to understand that we are God’s beloved, and to approach God by faith.

I love your blog.  The photos of your daughter are absolutely inspirational and motivational for my own life.  I want a child like faith.
