Jimmy vs. Wild: Brave Husband vs. Huge Disgusting Spider

If Bear Grylls needs to find a new place to survive, he should try my house.

In addition to the scorpions and lizards we’ve found roaming IN our house, Jimmy found this spider outside in our yard while he was mowing the other day.

The picture doesn’t quite do it justice. It’s literally as big as my outstretched hand.

Yelch...ugh..ick...eww...(shiver)....

Not knowing what it was and with three small kids who play in the yard daily, clearly we couldn’t let it live.

It needed to be destroyed.

It was hanging in it’s web - so we couldn’t just smash it.

Our solution? Hedge clippers.

Yes.  I survived.  But so did the Spider....I think.  I’m pretty sure the hedge clippers took care of two of it’s legs, so there may be a six legged spider in our yard.  And it is mad......and waiting.

Now see? THIS is when I get out the spray...and any kind of spray will do.  Bugspray, hairspray, windex, doesn’t really matter.  Cruel?  Maybe.  But. Will it be able to bite my family?  I think not.  Spiders are one of the things I fear.  alot.  I can’t even relax in a room if I know there is a spider looming about.

Glad you’re okay Jimmy.  Keep the hairspray handy.

Okay, so I’m a total lurker.  I can’t help myself.  I have to leave a comment today....that is hilarious!  Great video, and I love the ending ("Jimmy?").  Thanks for the laugh.  I needed that today!  smile

We have one of those spiders living by the faucet in our front yard right now.  I’m not exactly a fan of spiders, but I do think it’s kind of pretty!  And by the way, they’re not poisonous!  smile

You guys are fun even in the face of serious spider danger.  If GOW (Golden Orb Weaver??) resurfaces, I think I’d like to see how it holds up to hairspray or windex...or both?!

psalm8410,
I’m pretty sure the Golden Orb Weaver has a natural instinct that prevents it from crossing Valley Mills. I’m sure you’re safe…

Diana,
Thanks for the research. Golden Orb Weaver sounds much more official than Huge Disgusting Spider.

Euphrony,
I did let them play outside today.

They survived.

Cristy,
We thought about a spray, but it was just so huge we didn’t want to just make it mad....oops.

Perhaps if we encounter it again one of us can use the hedge clippers and the other can have the Windex…

Lisa,
I love it when people de-lurk. It’s so nice to “meet” you! I’m glad it made you laugh. Jimmy and I have been laughing about it for days.

It’s pretty at your house. It’s not pretty when it’s at my house. grin Good to know it’s not poisonous. Thanks!

Marianne,
Let’s just hope it doesn’t resurface…

After Jimmy missed it with the shovel and we weren’t sure where it went, we both did the “Ick, Is-it-on-me?” Dance.

Look on the bright side.  At least you don’t have one of these in your backyard.

that is a big nasty spider!

My oldest boy is obbsessed with spiders, (and trying to get bit by them so he turns into spider man… goodie...)
And he caught this big spider who’s body was covered in little baby spiders! It was nasty.  We kept her (outside) in the bug cage, all the babies got out, and I think she eventually died.  I had a few nightmares of her trying to attack me, mad that we’d caught her....

I’ll take arachnids (spiders) over flies any day.  I think they are kinda cool.  In a creepy sorta way.
Funny video

”...you can literally hear the screech of millions of mosquitoes caught in those webs.” THAT is SCARY Stephen!!!!!!  I have goosebumps (but would still like to hear it-haha.)

I’m an exterminator by day and I’m not saying I know it all, but we call them banana spiders or garden spiders around here.

They are NOT poisonous and they’re actually good to have in the yard because they catch all flying bugs like mosquitoes, moths and such. So, I’d keep it around if you could.

My wife says if you hang around it alot and say your name it’ll write your name in the web. I’m not sure about that one!!!!!!

Kevin,
That actually makes me feel much better. I’m still not sure I want to hang around it, though. grin

Many spiders will attempt to protect themselves by biting, especially if they are unable to flee. Some tarantulas have a second kind of defense, a patch of urticating hairs, or urticating setae, on their abdomens, which is generally absent on modern spiders and Mesothelae.

Chill out it’s only a spider first of all and secondly you know that spiders of all creature get rid of pesky mosquitoes, bats, flies, mice and other creatures. I suggest you call a specialist or a professor and have them move the spider to a more convieninent location.
