Jimmy Has Chosen Wisely

On any given day, by the time Jimmy leaves his office at 5:30pm, at least one of the following will be untrue:
1. Dinner will be ready
2. The house will be clean
3. The children will be happy
4. The wife will be happy
Jimmy has determined that #4 is the most important.
Such a wise man he is.
What is your house like just before dinnertime?

In my house, the expectation of dinner ready has been removed, which allows #4 to be true at least 80% of the time. (#2 and #3 are always a toss up, and #3 matters more to me than it does to Brian). As long as I make sure there is something to be cooked (meat defrosted, etc), Brian cooks while I feed the baby. It works for us.

Our house is usually pretty chaotic between the hours of five and six! I tell my friends not to bother calling during ‘the witching hour’ because I won’t even answer the phone. My focus is on getting dinner fixed and keeping the kids somewhat sane!
Jimmy’s a good man if he knows the importance of #4 on your list!

My husband cooks (& does the shopping - he’s better at both), so #1 gets done when he gets home. He’s a good sport. Every now and then he gets that “nobody appreciates me-housewife” look, it kind of cracks me up. When that happens, we do our best to be extra kind.

Lately, I’ve been trying to prepare for the coming week on the weekends so that dinner time on weekdays only looks like warming up something to eat. It’s been working well for us, since I don’t get home from work until about 6pm. We are usually eating by 6:30.

I have accepted that God gave me TV for the express purpose of any chance of #4 ever becoming a reality. So at 5:30pm, Kids are eating dinner that Mom prepared thanks to the amazing soothing capacities of Word Girl.
Hallelujah and Amen.

There’s usually a pretty good chance that the kids and I are happy (now that the youngest is over 3 years old...that wasn’t usually the case when he was younger), but the house is never ever completely clean, and supper is usually 30 minutes from being ready. I guess happiness is more important than those other things, thought, right?
