It’s All About March Madness, Baby!!!

This is one of my favorite times of the year. March Madness. I love the drama and the upsets and the stories behind the players.

Here are some random facts about me and March Madness:

I’ve been watching the NCAA tournament since the days of Christian Laettner and Bobby Hurley.

The One Shining Moment song/highlight video always makes me cry.

I got to meet Brice Drew a few years ago (of Valpo buzzer beater fame).

My husband and I have filled out brackets every year of our 9 year marriage.

We make our kids fill them out too. We’ve used various methods, depending on their age. When they were babies, we’d put two different colored balls in front of them and we’d make their selection for each game depending on the ball they picked up. Now that they’re older, we’ll read the names of the teams and let them pick.

So what about you? Do you care about March Madness? Have you made your picks? Or are you a March Madness widow?

I’ve never been that big of a basketball fan, personally, but I give a hoot this year.  An amazing thing has happened: Texas A&M;has figured out how to play on the courts!  We had a few bad games at the end of the year, but I still think we can do well in the playoffs.

Frankly, I’m not an Aggie fan, but the turnaround their program has made is stinkin’ cool.

Since Baylor isn’t in the tourney and I’m a bit weary of Texas, perhaps I’ll root for A&M;.

(Did I just say that?)

I follow the tournament when I’ve got a team in it.  Six teams from the Pac-10 are there, so this should be interesting.  Consider Oregon a one-and-done situation, though.

My uncle played for Oregon State and had to guard Lew Alcindor (later Kareem Abdul-Jabbar).  My uncle is now over 60, and still plays in national and international tournaments for an over-50 league.

When I was at A&M;, the head basketball coach was Tony Barony (sp?).  The highlights of the games covered by the school paper was not rebounds, three-pointers, or the score.  No, the highlight was how long into the game it would be before coach Barony would take off his coat.  That, my friends, is the sign of a pathetic team.  To see where they have come in just the last three years is nothing short of amazing to me.

Just curious, but what do your brackets look like?

Insteresting Christian Sabbath side note if y’all do not know.

There is around 336 Division one college basketball programs but only TWO who will not play a game or pratice on the Sabbath (the Lord’s day).

The only two who will not play on sunday is Brigham Young Univeristy (BYU) affialiated with The Chruch of Jesus Christ of Later-Day Saints and Campbell Camels affialiated with the Southern Baptist’s.

So whenever they make the NCAA tournament they have to be scheduled on a Thursday / Saturday bracket.

BYU (Brigham Young) is in this year. Not sure last time Campbell has made it there.

Seth,
Does Rice have a basketball team?
I guess you’re not into sports then...or just not basketball? I seem to remember you saying something about how you missed the Superbowl for the first time in years…

Rick,
That’s really cool about your uncle. Although, an over 50 basketball league sounds like an injury waiting to happen!

Euphrony,
I haven’t filled out my bracket yet...it’s on my to do list though.

Kim,
That is very interesting. I didn’t know that. I went to Baylor (I don’t think we have any policy against playing on Sunday) and when my parents ordered my graduation watch with the Baylor Seal on it, the company they ordered it from accidentally sent them a BYU watch. Ooops.

Funny - I just clicked over here to see what was going in Kat’s world right after helping my 3 year old make wise choices for his bracket. I didn’t know there were others out there........

I really don’t know what you’re talking about.  I also have not a clue as to who one person is that you mentioned up there in that post.

March Madness is always fun because of enthusiastic young people playing their hearts out and putting so much passion into something, and because there’s always some amazing underdog cinderella story.

But I’m just not much of a basketball fan any more, and my wife absolutely hates and despises it. In our house, basketball on TV is like a fire in the middle of the living room floor—it is stamped out quickly in a panic, and deliberate steps are taken to avoid it happening again in the future.

That’s hilarious C-Hammer!

To our family, it’s also like a fire in the middle of the living room floor, except we all gather round and roast marshmallows over it.
