If You Didn’t Do What You Do, What Would You Do?

If I wasn’t a stay at home mom who gets to have picnics everyday, I’d be a web designer/consultant and play on my computer even more than I currently do.
What about you? If you didn’t do what you do, what would you do?

I’ve actually been thinking about this question a lot lately. The three things I keep coming back to are:
Musician
Author
Actor
All artistic. All rewarding. None I’m actually good at.

Right now: Stay at home mom in school for web design.
What else I would I do? I’d be a special effects artist for a major motion picture company or a novelist.

Belly Dancer at an Indian food restaurant..... or a musician.

I’m a sahm and a partner in my husband’s business. Honestly, I can’t think of anything I’d rather be doing. Except maybe I’d do web design and get paid for it.

This is a tough one for me to answer....all my answers sound quite a bit like what I am actually doing.
Right now: stay at home mom (who, like you, gets to have picnics every day)
Other choices: preschool teacher, daycare provider, professional babysitter…
I guess I really love this season of life and want it to last forever!

currently I am a “warehouse facilitator” whatever that means...thanks for the vague title, guys. what i DO is configure cisco routers, and keep track of office supplies.
what I would do (and will be working toward) is bing a professional organizer. i would like to work mainly with (but definitely not limited to) churches. i would go in and work with the leaders and volunteers to help them be more organized, efficient, productive, fiscally sound, and impactful.

Currently: On staff at a church plant. It’s awesome.
But if I were to do something else, I’d like to be a photographer, or a web designer, or videographer, or do something on The Discovery Channel.
Also, someone said they were a sahm above. I didn’t realize the acronym for that, so i looked it up. And I found this info:
stay-at-home mom
Stay-at-home moms are women who choose to make raising their children and caring for their home their full-time job. Many factors are involved in this decision, including the potential benefits to the child or children, the woman’s desire to be in the workplace versus the home, and the economics of forfeiting the woman’s income.
According to the website http://www.salary.com, the average wage that would have been earned by a woman performing the multiple tasks of a stay-at-home mom — if she did them outside the home — in 2006 is $143,121. Those jobs are housekeeper, daycare center teacher, cook, computer operator, laundry machine operator, janitor, facilities manager, van driver, CEO, and psychologist.
To keep this in perspective, consider the fact that the US Census Bureau puts the median annual income of a woman who has a bachelor’s degree and works full-time at $39,818.
In the salary.com study, stay-at-home moms reported working 91.6 hours a week.

I love getting to work in the music industry, but if I weren’t doing that, I’d love to write full time. Hopefully I’ll end up doing both of them down the road.

If I could handle the pressure of living off my writing, that’s what I’d like to do.

Currently teaching 3rd graders in Colombia. If not here, I think I’d be a rock star. Ok, not really, but I’d be a really good one if I had the chance. Really. I would.

Right now, I’m helping in the Boeing labs as we get the electronics and various software pieces all working together for the 787 Dreamliner. That’s been interesting, and it’s fun living in Seattle for a while too.
My first loves are writing, music, and photography. I’m doing a bit of all of those now (as can be seen on my websites), but it would be fun to do more. Maybe someday!
Really looking forward to spending much of next week in Nashville for LifeWork 2.0 and a couple days of bumming around. [ http://www.lifework20.com/ ]

I looooovee my job, but I could see enjoying being a guidebook author. Free travel!

If I wasn’t a student learning to be a teacher… I’d want to be a teacher haha. But assume teaching is not an option…
I think I’d want to be a stay-at-home mom or a writer.

I’m a full time writer/journalist, and I do enjoy my job. Most days, though, I am at a computer and conducting phone interviews, due to the nature of my job.
I dream of writing, traveling and doing photography and music as I go. I don’t want to just look at the world outside my window (which has a great view)...I want to be out in it. And, of course, helping to further Kingdom of God would be at the forefront of all that.
Who knows, perhaps my dream will come true soon enough. =)

Well...I’m a college senior looking to end up in grad/law school and get some kind of job where I can help kids, vaguely.
In my other life, I’d be a professional dancer touring the world. Not that I haven’t done a little bit of that (in an amateur company), but I wouldn’t stop. It’s way too much fun.
Apr 30, 08 at 10:49 am
I suppose if I had to give up exotic dancing I’d own and operate a bakery.

I’m an English prof right now, but I’d love to be a singer in a band (I don’t feel confident enough about my voice to go solo, but I’m great at harmony). I also would love to own a bookstore. Or write books. Or edit them. I guess I’d rather do a lot of other things!

It’s funny, I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. I used to have a long, very detailed Excel spreadsheet organized by category (seriously) of all the things I was going to accomplish in my life. So if you had asked this question a year ago I could have offered you a prioritized, alphabetized list in response.
But these days, oddly enough, my answer is that I would just pray and see what God seemed to be calling me to do. I guess that’s kind of boring, but that’s where I am.

Travis,
I beg to differ. I think you’d be a hilarious writer!
Rachel,
Where are you studying web design?
TheCachinnator and Brody,
I never knew you two were professional dancers...cool.
And Brody, I’ve hear “about” your music, but have you ever posted it? I think lots of people would be interested in hearing it.
Karen,
That sound’s ideal! Your family gets a lot of together time, I guess. Ours does too. I love it.
Lisa H,
You’re SUCH a great and inspiring mom.
Nate,
Wow. That sounds like something that would really be needed. You should definitely keep moving forward with that vision. Very cool.
Blake,
$143,121 - Hmmm...my paycheck must have gotten lost in the mail… thanks for the fun info!
Stephen,
You really do have an awesome job…
Amy,
Go for it!!!
Emily,
You’re *teaching 3rd graders...in COLUMBIA* You ARE a rockstar....
Johnathan,
How fun that you’re going to Lifework 2.0! It sounds awesome. Have a great time!
Texas in Africa,
You would be a great tour book writer, except the countries you generally visit, don’t really seem to be tourist hotspots…
Superlindsey,
I think a teaching degree will be awesome preparation for being a state at home mom. I wish I’d had a degree more relevant to what I’m doing now…
Rachel #2,
You’re a professional writer? Very cool. I feel the need to spellcheck my blog posts more often now, though. And please forgive all my. Grammar - error’s:
Rebekah,
My sister in law spent a few years working for Royal Carribean dancing in their Broadway-type shows. it seemed like quite the life.
I think the grad/law school direction is really cool, though.
Erin,
What kind of books would you write? I think you should go ahead and write one. I’d read it.
Jennifer,
I think that’s a wonderful place to be at! Although, I do confess the Type A part of me is really interested in seeing that spreadsheet.

Life circumstances now prevent this, but I would love to have worked in the church music business of some type. And if I couldn’t do that, I’d just blog for a living.

For years I worked in the commercial Christian realm, music & books.
I have been: a pool cleaner, hay hauler, vet assistant, Dr Pepper salesman, UPS driver, commercial painter, fry cook, insurance salesman. (not in that order)
I own a CPA firm and get to deal with famous athletes which is pretty fun most of the time.
But I would love to be a baseball coach. The only reason I didn’t do it was because teachers are so poorly paid. Sometimes I would like a do-over. I have never seen an opening day baseball game in person. Ever.
