How To Train For A Marathon When You Can’t Run Around The Block

I’ve always wanted to do something that ends in “athon” whether that’s a marathon, a half marathon or a triathalon.

There’s a half marathon here in town next fall that I’d love to participate in so I thought I’d go ahead and start training for it.

I’m 5 1/2 months pregnant.....I don’t run so well right now.

So how am I training, you ask?

The farthest I’ve ever run is 10 miles and while that’s short of a half marathon, I have to imagine that the challenges are similar. It’s no longer about physical ability as much as it is about discipline and pushing past what I want to do.

I’ve been trying to challenge myself more throughout the day. When the kids are in bed and I’m ready to sit down, I’ve been trying to push myself to make sure the house is clean before I sit down (because once I sit down on the couch with my husband and my computer I know I won’t get up again...)

I’ve been trying to play a few more games with my kids than I normally would. I’ve trying to clean up the dishes immediately after the meals. I’ve been trying to put away laundry as soon as it’s folded. I’ve been working on doing the things on my to do list that I don’t want to do.

So for now, I’m starting small and training myself to push past how I feel and my desire to relax. I have a long way to go.

Maybe in a few months, though, I’ll be able to run around the block.
