Henry David Thoreau on Conflict

I love this quote;

When a dog runs at you, whistle for him.
-Henry David Thoreau

I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the importance of embracing conflict.

In my day to day life, I seek comfort. My clothes. My house. My food. My time. My entertainment.

But who ever accomplished anything in life by seeking comfort?

Here we are on day 20 of The 40 Day Fast. We’ve read about needs near and far for the past 20 days.

And I believe that it’s at this halfway mark that we can allow ourselves to grow weary or we can press in all the more.

I think that now that we’re aware of the overwhelming amount of need out there, it’s time to act.

I have few ideas, some small and some big, about how I can respond to what I’ve learned so far. One small idea is that each time I make my weekly trip to the grocery store I’ll have my kids help me buy some groceries for our local food pantry as well. My big idea is something I’ll be blogging about later this week.

Change isn’t easy, but I want to embrace it.

What about you? Do you have any ideas about how we can respond to what we’ve learned in the last 20 days? Let’s brainstorm.

Kat,
I like the grocery idea.  Another simple one is to make sure you include the poor in your prayers as a family.  That may sound trite, but I believe in the power of prayer. I also believe that many people just plain forget.  My family prays for the little girl we sponsor through Compassion in the Philippines.
I’ve heard about people who make placemats with pictures of children who are poor at their dinner table...to remind them to be thankful for what they have.  Others leave an empty plate on the table, to remind them of those who don’t have as much as they do.  Little things.
Can’t wait to hear what your big idea is!
