Hand Sanitizer Warning From Snopes.com

You may have received the email forward that warns about the dangers of having hand sanitizer around small children. There is a very real risk of alcohol poisoning if they ingest it.

Frankly, I never believe email forwards. More to the point, I actually never read them. However, Cristy sent me an email with a link to the Snopes site that verifies the danger of hand sanitizer. Snopes.com is a site that checks the accuracy of the info found in all those forwarded emails and other places where urban legends start.

If you have small kids in your house, please read this page.

Thanks Cristy.

No problem Kat!  Like you, I don’t usually read forwards like this, but the snopes link caught my eye.  My son also told me a couple of days ago that he heard young teenagers are now drinking RUBBING alochol for a high.  So when I received this email this morning, I was more than a little curious.  Thanks for posting this!

Mouthwash is the same.  Rubbing alcohol and mouthwash are isopropyl alcohol (IPA), and is different from ethanol, which is what we drink and what is in the hand sanitizers.  Drinking IPA can get you drunk, just like drinking ethanol will.  However, our bodies do not handle IPA as well as it handles ehtanol, so it can do even more damage than regular alcoholic drinks.  In short, drinking IPA is very bad.

Minors need to be better informed between rubbing alcohol(isopropyl) and drinking alcohol(ethanol).

You shouldn’t take alcohol combined with drugs. My “rebel son” just ended his drug treatment and it wasn’t easy at all for any of tour family members.
