Frankly, I’m Frightened

This is the second night in a row that it’s happened.
I thought last night was just a fluke, but it’s happening again tonight...and let’s just say I’m getting concerned.
My husband....
My husband is watching The BassMaster Classic.
And last night he watched a NASCAR event too.
I’m sorry, but I just don’t think catching supper or turning left are sports.
The real kicker is that there are several college basketball games on that he could be watching. I’m not sure what’s happening to him. I don’t know how I feel about it.
I’ll try not to overreact, but I will watch him closely as we pass belt buckle displays at Walmart…

Turning left in a minivan—not a sport.
Turning left at 196 MPH? Boogity, boogity, boogity!

I’m offended. So are you saying that men are only allowed to watch sports?! If by your standard Nascar and fishing are truly not sports, why must he watch a sport? Is he not officially a man if he doesn’t? What if he started watching Extreme Home Makeover or Lost? Would that also be an issue for you?
(just kidding here of course!) I don’t think I will be watching fishing, poker, etc, any time soon but I do know there is lots more excitement watching Nascar then there is watching Formula one or Indy. Turns, hills, and S-shaped roads do not make a race exciting, they actually make it boring since they have no opportunities to pass and the guy who starts in the pole position often wins.
Since you’re having your first boy I think you should get used to oval race tracks- our TVs have Lightning Mcqueen going around them for a higher percentage of the day than any other ‘sport’

C-Hammer,
“Turning left in a minivan—not a sport.

I think that’s a skill - not a sport. A sport shoud cause you to sweat because of physical exertion. (Yes, I’m just being ornery.)
Dave,
Actually, all we watch in our house is sports. Both my husband and I love sports. It’s the only thing we watch on tv. I don’t actually remember the last “TV show” we watched regularly. Occassionally, we do actually watch HGTV or .... old Cosby reruns.
It’s not a question of him being manly if he doesn’t watch sports (yes I realize you were kidding) it’s a matter of whether I want to be subjected to faux sports and the world of Bass fishing and Nascar…
Of course all this is in jest, but I did actually see the “Weigh In” for the fishing competition and it was truly the most bizarre thing I’ve seen. There was an arena full of thousands of people, pyrotechnics, and loud rap (yes, rap music).
People had signs and were screaming and cheering as they weighed the fish.
(Please read that sentence again.)
I’ve never seen anything like it. Clearly we Americans have way too much time and money on our hands.

Kat dear - The ‘weigh in’ is one of the funnier moments in sports. I am glad you got to experience that. I would be more of a fisherman if it were not so hot most of the year.
As for NASCAR, I have no excuse. But since that sport enthralls so many people, I thought I should give it a fair shot.
Next I will see how entertaining the professional bowling and billiards circuits are.
Also, you say that all ‘we’ ever watch is sports, but really I never know whether you are watching or not...you usually seem deep in cyber-world behind the monitor of your laptop....except when I accidentally flip to a drama while trying to avoid commercials. Then you really perk up.
That’s why my new commercial default channel is Nick at Nite - I always hope Cosby is on, or Family Ties.....

I watch...don’t I constantly amaze you with my sports trivia knowledge?

Have you ever tried to run 200 laps at 200 mph, it’s not just physically exhausting, but mentally as well. Much more so than golf, yet no one questions that as a sport!
BTW, It’s funny to see you guys having a marital discussion on a blog!
Disclaimer- I don’t watch Nascar- actually I don’t watch much of any sport. But the few times I do watch sports, Nascar is about the only one that interests me for more than a few minutes.

I’m afraid I can’t run much faster than 15 mph. What kind of shoes do you have?
FYI - I don’t really think golf is a sport either.
