Dear Dr. On Call…

Dear Dr. On Call,
I’m sorry, but I’m one of those obnoxious, overprotective, overconcerned parents. For example, when my 2 year old has been throwing up for 24 hours and hasn’t been able to keep down any solids or liquids and is in danger of dehydration I do crazy things like call the doctor.
I suppose that your six figure salary does not afford luxuries like working pagers or cell phones. Perhaps that’s why after 6 hours and 5 calls to the answering service I never heard back from you. I can only imagine the circumstances that prevented you from responding to my calls.
1. Perhaps you were crocheting a scarf for your grandmother when your cat, who was holding your ball of yarn, spotted a mouse and chased it, taking your yarn in which your fingers were intertwined consequently breaking all ten digits and rendering you unable to dial a phone.
2. Perhaps you had been rocking out to Paris Hilton’s new cd on your iPod and contrary to the advice you give to all your teenage patients, you didn’t use the volume control and as a result you suffered from temporary hearing loss which would explain why you didn’t hear your pager go off.
4. Perhaps you’re an anti-technology person and have yet to figure out your “new fangled phone.”
3. Perhaps your not a phone person.
5. Perhaps you get your numbers mixed up. If this list looks like it’s in proper numerical order, then that’s definitely the issue.
I can’t be sure why you didn’t call any of the 3 phone numbers I left on any of the 5 pages, but I hope you get the problem resolved soon. I’m sure that the “chat” that my primary doctor will be having with you today will be helpful…
Sincerely,
Kat (the overprotective, overconcerned mom)

Oh, Kat, I am sympathetic to your plight. When our little one had a bug for over a week, we finally landed in the hospital for dehydration. It was excrutiating for everyone. I had called docs several times before this, but they basically shrugged me off because there’s not much they do for a virus.
Even in the hospital, the IV (another horrible experience for a little one) helped with hydration, but there was basically no treatment for the illness. Ugh! So frustrating!
I know it’s miserable. Hang in there!

I’m so sorry you had to go through that Crystal. Fortunately, she seems to be better today. She’s actually been able to keep a bit of food and pedialyte down. Hopefully, this is the end of it…
