Crazy Busy

I’m hard at working trying to wrap up the final stages of Shaun’s new site. It’s definitely the most in-depth, complex and challenging project I’ve ever done, but it’s been really, really fun. I’ve learned so much and I’m very excited about seeing it in action sometime in the next week or two. It’s going to be an awesome site.

Is your week busy? Anything exciting in your plans?

The only thing we have going on this week is dinner tomorrow at Carabbas with a bunch of couples from our Couples for Christ group.  One of the couples is trying to adopt a little boy, Victor, from Ukraine and this is a fundraiser.

Other than that, I’ll be busy getting ahead at work so that I can take off the whole week of Thanksgiving. smile

Can’t wait to see Shaun’s new site!

Carabbas....YUM!

I read Victor’s site. What a neat story. Be sure to order a lot of food for the fundraiser!

The whole week? That sounds like fun. Do you have a big gathering?

Thanks for looking at the site!  The tickets were pre-pay and the menu is set.  Carabbas agreed to donate $8 of each $18 ticket to their fund.

She’s never done a website before and there are things she’d like to do, like add a paypal button and links.  She’s using Homestead...do you have a suggestion for a better program to use?  I’ve only looked at it from the outside thus far, so I’m not sure what Homestead will do. (Not so sure I could figure it out either.)

I’m taking the whole week because I can only carry over 10 vacation days and it’s use ‘em or lose ‘em.  Plus I’m off 2 1/2 weeks at Christmas!  We always go to my hubby’s grandma’s the night before Thanksgiving and the two of us stay up all night cooking and talking.  It’s one of the days I look forward to all year!  Wow, she can really cook!  After 8 years, I’m starting to learn some of the recipes.  cool smile

Cristy,
Sounds like a really fun holiday! Your husband’s grandma certainly has some energy...all night cooking? Wow. It’s wonderful you all get along so well.

I’m not familiar with Homestead. Actually, I’d recommend that she use some sort of existing blog system, like blogger.com or wordpress.com (my preference is wordpress - it’s more robust). There are lots of design templates to choose from and it’s probably much easier to add paypal buttons and links.

Here’s the HTML code to add a link to a webpage:

<a href="WEB ADDRESS HERE">LINK TEXT HERE</a>

For example:

<a href="http://www.thesecretlifeofkat.com"</a>Kat's Blog</a>

Here’s the code to add a paypal donation button:

<form action="https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr" method="post">
<
input type="hidden" name="cmd" value="_xclick">
<
input type="hidden" name="business"
value="PUT YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT HERE">
<
input type="hidden" name="item_name" value="BRING VICTOR HOME">
<
input type="hidden" name="no_shipping" value="2">
<
input type="hidden" name="no_note" value="1">
<
input type="hidden" name="currency_code" value="USD">
<
input type="hidden" name="tax" value="0">
<
input type="hidden" name="lc" value="US">
<
input type="hidden" name="bn" value="PP-DonationsBF">
<
input type="image" src="https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/btn/x-click-but21.gif"
border="0" name="submit"
alt="Make payments with PayPal - it's fast, free and secure!">
<
img alt="" border="0" src="https://www.paypal.com/en_US/i/scr/pixel.gif"

width="1" height="1">
</
form>

Paypal will actually generate a the HTML for a button for her if she just logs into her paypal account and then clicks on “Merchant Services.” On the main page there is a link for creating Donation buttons. She’ll just fill in the options and voila.

Hope that helps.

Another idea is for her to create a logo or use a special picture of Victor and her family and have items made at http://www.cafepress.com. She could then sell those items to raise money. It’s free for her and people might be more likely to buy an item as opposed to just donating money.

Have fun at dinner!

Wow!  Thanks Kat!!  I already suggested to her that if she really wants to keep homestead, she should create a blog and link one to the other somehow so that she can journal, and I knew blogger could have a paypal button.  I’ve never heard of cafepress.com, so I’ll pass that along, too.  She was a little hesitant to put a paypal button on, but I was trying to think of other ways to raise the money.  Cafepress might be the answer she’s looking for.  Thank you for all this information and for taking so much time to do all this!

We had a wonderful dinner tonight...there were about 14 of us there (different tables) and the food was great!

Ken’s g’ma is slowing down a little each year and I think she’s hoping to eventually pass the Thanksgiving Feast torch to me.  She tells me out of all the granddaughters she has, I’m the only that’ll be able to make her Thanksgiving dinner when she’s gone.  Good times, hearing stories about my hubby as a little boy, even if they are the same ones over and over sometimes.  wink

Have a great night.
