Bats, Birds and Vacations

Jimmy and I are in Austin on a little getaway (first time in 6 years...it was a bit traumatic leaving our kids..) and we just saw these big black “clouds” moving all around the sky.
It turns out those clouds are thousands and thousands of little black birds - or bats (we can’t tell.)
Either way, it’s pretty disgusting.
(I’m writing this on my palm centro - so if it looks wonky, that’s why.)
Any recommendations on what to do in Austin?
What are your summer vacation plans?

That is slightly disgusting and also a little disturbing. I hope the clouds disperse.
We took an early summer vacation trip to St. Louis, to celebrate our first year of marriage! (Our anniversary is not until tomorrow, but we couldn’t get the hotel we wanted on that date, so we went early.) It rained a lot, but we managed to squeeze in all the things we’d wanted to do.
Have a great time!!

Take in some live music on 6th Street.

I don’t know much about Austin, but at our local science center they have a bat cave. There is one place where you can push a button and hear a recording--I’ve heard it enough times to have it memorized...."Austin is home to the largest colony of cave-dwelling bats in the United States...”

Hey, those bats are our number one tourist attraction!!! Hundreds of people stand on the Congress Avenue bridge at sunset to watch the bats each night in the summer.
Austin is my home, so I can recommend tons of things. Live music is a must (check austinchronicle.com for listings), although I would avoid most of 6th Street unless drunk 18-year-olds are your thing. For food, Guero’s on South Congress is great Mexican, as is Maudie’s Too on South Lamar. Blue Star Cafeteria on North Lamar is not a cafeteria, but they have yummy salads and burgers. Galaxy Cafe, at the new Triangle development (where Lamar and Guadalupe merge), is also really tasty. Driving out to the Salt Lick in Driftwood for bbq is an Austin tradition.
If you like the outdoors, the Barton Creek greenbelt is a fun place to do some light hiking or biking. You can also climb Mt. Bonnell (not as hard as it sounds) or jog around Town Lake (now known as Lady Bird Lake), or rent a kayak to go out on the water. This time of year, a swim at Barton Springs is a must. It’s on the south side of Zilker Park.
Also, I know this is crazy, but go see the Whole Foods flagship at 6th and Lamar. It’s a wonderland and everyone takes their visitors there. Have a great getaway!!!

If they are bats, cool. If they are birds, then disgusting!!!!
I have no idea what to see in Austin… but they have a good burger place… something called Hoola Hut, or something like that.
Have fun!!! Who’s with the kids?

Hey! Call me if you want directions to any place in Austin or suggestions. Diana has my info.
If you like sushi, there is great place - Sushi Sake. It’s a bit expensive but awesome. Ask about off the menu rolls like the Carlos or Suzie. We love the Carlos.
Also, there is a fabulous (expensive)Italian restaurant Carmello’s. Z-Tejas downtown has a fun ambiance and resonable prices. Manuel’s is an upscale Mexican restaurant that is pretty fresh and yummy. I love Abuelo’s Mexican restaurant.
There are tons of things to do in Austin. Let me know what you have in mind, and I’d be happy to try to help ya!

Oops… I forgot to tell you about all the cool free stuff. Check out Zilker park. It’s great. Or go for a walk around Town Lake. Also, if you don’t mind a little hike and paying $8 for entrance, there is a great county park on the sw side. Reimer’s Climbing and Fishing Ranch. It actually is gorgeous with limestone cliffs anda super blue river that you can wade in or swim in. Okay, so I guess I’ll stop or I would take up a lot os space. I hope you have tons of fun!
