Baby Ettiquette 101

On a recent Saturday, I was at the grocery store with my 6 month old son.
He was in his stroller and I was pushing him through the aisles when a man, who was clearly in a hurry, came barrelling around the corner and ran into my son’s stroller.
He didn’t stop or apologize. He even had the gall to push my son away from me so that he could hurry through.
Let me repeat that last part again:
he pushed my baby away from me
Mmmmm.........do not touch my baby. Mama ain’t happy.
I quickly took hold of the stroller and checked on my little boy who was blissfully unaware of the grave misdeed done to him.
Had the man even glanced back I surely would have given him a very calm, very serious lecture about baby and stroller ettiquette.
Then I would have kicked him in the shins.
Moral of the story: If you’re going to touch someone else’s baby and push them away from their mother, you’d best wear some good shin guards.
Parents, do you have any other baby ettiquette tips or pet peeves?

oh my. That is the whole mama bear thing. I don’t like grocery shopping during non mommy hours, (later in the evening) a lot of people are clearly in a hurry and annoyed.

Coming between a mother and her child is as foolhardy (and almost as mortally dangerous) as putting your hand between a hungry dog and his food bowl, or between a TV addict and the remote.

Kristen, I’ve been shopping at Wal-Mart at 1:00 am around here and seen partents with their pre-school kids. There’s apparently no such thing as non-mommy hours in Houston.
And I, as a papa, would have been much less than pleased with what that inconsiderate and dangerous person did.

oh my goodness, non-parents just don’t seem to get it. we were at mr. gatti’s once, my hubby was at the table with the kids (my youngest was only a few months old and he was crying) and i was getting food for all the kids. i was waiting in line and the girl behind me, who couldn’t have been too far out of high school says “i wish someone would shut that stupid kid up!”...(i have never been so close to hitting someone in my life, which may have been due, in part, to postpartum issues)...i just took a deep breath, turned around and said “that’s my stupid kid!”

I would have applauded you if you had the chance to follow through on your lecture (and shin-kickin).
Even though its been 17 years since my baby was a baby, the list of pet peeves is clear in my head. I guess number one would be along the lines of what happened to you: a person disregarding a baby as if it were a NON PERSON! But then again, maybe the same guy would have ran into a little old lady/man in a wheelchair without a notice too...another pet peeve, treating old people like NON PERSONS!
