All Kinds of Geek Fun: Apps, Info, Freeware

Let me preface this post with the fact that most everything contained herein is for Mac OSX only. Sorry Windows folks, but I use a Mac so I don’t often run across non-Mac apps. (I just threw in a Windows app that is FREE for today only. HT: Pete)

Here are some fun geeky links I’ve run across lately:
1. DoIt - This is a really handy to do list manager. Here’s what the creators site has to say about it:

Do It is a small application to manage categorized to do lists.  Each to do item can be linked with a file on your computer, a URL, such as the address of a website, or a contact from your address book. The linked file or URL can be opened directly from the Do It window.

Do It includes plugins for Address Book, to quickly set contact reminders, and a plugin for Quicksilver, to create to do list items directly from the Quicksilver interface.  Do It also integrates with iCal and is Applescriptable.

I personally use kGTD which runs with OmniOutliner Pro, but since that setup costs $70, I thought I’d throw this little gem your way.

2. Quicksilver eBook - I LOVE Quicksilver. What is it? At it’s most basic it’s an application launcher, but at it’s most complex, it’s a program that unites every document, program, song, address etc. on your computer. Without leaving the application I’m in or using a mouse and with only a few keystrokes I can add items to my to do list, send a quick email (even if I’m not in my mail program), open a document, change songs in iTunes and a myriad of other things.

Because of it’s power, Quicksilver can be overwhelming. Howard Melman has written a free 89 page ebook that will transform anyone from a Quicksilver newbie to a jedi in no time.

3. Vienna - Vienna is a freeware, open source RSS reader. I prefer it to Net NewsWire Lite. It’s got a clean interface and a very robust feature set.

4. Organized Gourmet - A shareware recipe management program that has an integrated calendar that syncs with iCal to easily schedule meals.

5. Ringtone Maker - This program normally sells for $29, but it’s free today. If I had a PC, I’d download it and make a bunch of fun ringtones for my missing cellphone. (Yes, I recently lost it. I’m sad. I’m holding out that it’s still around the house somewhere.)

Well, that’s it for now. Do you know of any cool software, websites or some other such geekery? Please let me know.

(Some women are addicted to shoes. For me? It’s software...I’m weird...I know.)
