All Is Not Right With The World

It’s Sunday morning and my girls ran out to get the paper and came back empty handed.
The Sunday paper is not here.
I don’t really know how to function after this earth shattering news.
Every Sunday, we wake up, eat our gogurts, read our Bible stories, pray and then they get the newpaper. The girls will read and then tear, color, jump on, rip, cut and shred the comics. My husband reads all the important (boring) stuff. I “read” the ads. I only read the good ads, though, like Best Buy, Circuit City, Office Max, Office Depot, Sports Authority, Academy and Target. In that order. Once I’ve made sure that there isn’t anything I need to spend my money on at any of those stores, I’ll read the Parade magazine that comes with the Sunday paper.
By this time there is a huge layer of newpaper spread out over our entire house. The sports section is in front of the fireplace. The ads are on the kitchen table. The comics are liable to be anywhere. In the toilet or the laundry room. Cut into tiny little pieces on the kitchen floor, the victim of Sunday morning “art” projects. Or even in the toy baskets. Just before church we do a mad dash to clean it all up so that when we get home, we can eat our Taco Bell in a nice orderly home, well, at least one without newpaper strewn all over.
That’s what we do. Every Sunday.
Not today.
Today we’re just sitting in a circle staring blankly at one another, not sure how to act. My children are weeping and muttering something about wanting “Section E.” My husband is eating his cereal with one hand and looking at something just above his other hand, which is resting on the table. Normally, there would be a newspaper there. I’m not sure if he’s in denial or seeing a mirage.
Me? I’m burying my sorrows and emptiness through blogging.
What about you? Are you a newspaper reader? Did your paper come today? What sections did you read?
(Are there any good sales at Best Buy?)

I’m kind of a cheapskate. My oldest son had a paper route for about 3 years, and I got in the habit of just reading one of the extras from his stack most every day. Now that he’s moving up in the world and has a different job, I don’t get my freebies any more.

My husband reads the paper front to back. I’m with your girls, I only read the comics. Well, I guess do look at the ads to see who has the best deal on household products this week...but that’s not as fun as the comics.

A paper route? I didn’t think people still did that anymore.
Our paper person drives a car. Did your son do the bike thing? (The visual image that comes to mind when I think of a paper boy is of the poor kid from While You Were Sleeping who completely bites the dust while throwing the newspaper.)
So do you pay for the paper now or do you just stick to the tv news and blogs?

What’s a newspaper?

I just read news online.
The image of the paperboy is always and forever from Better Off Dead.
“I want my two dollars!!!”

What do you all do while you eat your breakfast? I’ve become so accustomed to reading the paper that when I don’t have it for one reason or another, I find myself reading cereal boxes, junk mail....anything with words on it.
You?

I don’t often sit down to breakfast. I usually eat it on the go. I know… it’s horrible. But it’s my life right now. As soon as I make a change, I’ll let you know.
