Too often in an artist’s excitement to get more gigs they overlook the basics. So rather than purchasing a venue database, scouring the net for venues, clubs or churches in your area, try starting with pencil and paper and building your own database.

These aren’t earth shattering ideas, but sometimes the most basic things done on a consistent basis can generate the biggest results.

  • List all the venues where you have performed.
  • Get in touch with your contact at each venue.
  • Ask for 3 (or more) referrals.
  • If it’s a church, ask if they have any upcoming retreats or conferences for which they might need your talent.
  • If it was a conference, ask for a list of the churches in attendence and whether they’ve booked the talent for the next conference.
  • Send a press kit to each of the referrals you receive and follow up a few days later.
  • Keep a database of referrals as well as one for successful gigs.
  • STAY IN TOUCH! Look at each gig as the beginning of a long term relationship and be sure to stay in touch with your contact on a regular basis.
  • Use your mailing list or blog to ask your fans for referrals.
  • Always send your press kit BEFORE calling a referral. That will create some interest and save you time in the long run. Otherwise, you’ll call, they’ll ask for the press kit and then you’ll have to follow up again.
