Now that you know what kind of music you make and how to describe it, you need to determine who your audience is or will be.
Do Some Research
If you already have an audience, do a bit of research.
1. What is their age range?
2. Do they lean toward a specific gender?
3. What other artists do they listen to?
4. How do they learn about new music?
5. Where do they spend time on the net?
If you’re just starting out, make a list of who you want your audience to be, but be realistic. If you have a heart to do more than just make a living from making music and you want to minister to and impact a certain demographic group, then narrow down what your target audience looks like using the questions listed above.
The Benefits of Knowing Your Audience
Identifying your audience will help you:
1. Find new listeners.
2. Communicate more effectively.
3. Impact them more deeply.
4. Build a community around your music.
The more intimately you are able to interact with your audience, the more likely they are to introduce you and your music to others.
Your Homework
Take 15-30 minutes today to answer these questions and if you haven’t done so already, take another 30 minutes to identify and describe your music.
It is on these two foundations that you’ll build your entire promotional plan.
