Give Your Music Away
One thing you’ll learn after reading this blog for awhile is that I’m a huge proponent of musicians offering a free song on their website.
My theory is that the song is like a business card. Once a your song goes into someone’s digital library you’re likely to stay there. After all, who deletes free music, right? Then, without any firther effort on your part, your music is regularly front and center on their iPod, computer or mp3 player.
Even if the person isn’t part of your target audience (which we’ll talk about tomorrow) they’re likely to give the song away to someone who is.
Don’t Make This Mistake...
Recently, I came across a record label that did everything right...and everything wrong in regard to getting their artists music in people’s digital libraries.
I downloaded several songs from a site called Freeccm.com. There are some real gems there. Sara Groves. Chris Rice. Derek Webb. There are also several artists I’ve not heard before.
Missing Metadata
The huge error that they made that I hope you make certain to avoid is that they didn’t include proper metadata in the mp3 files. So basically, I downloaded the music and now when it comes up on my iPod, I have no idea who is singing. It’s mildly frustrating for me, although I honestly just deleted the songs from the artists that I couldn’t already identify, and a fruitless promotion for the label and the artists.
When you post your mp3 to give to your audience, no matter how trivial the download...even if it’s just a simple demo made in Garageband, be sure to include accurate and meaningful metadata.
