“If you fail to plan you can plan to fail.”
“Everyone has the will to win, it’s only those with the will to prepare that do win.”

Get Started

It’s a new year. It’s time to get focused and to plan. When it comes to your music the first place to start your promotion is with yourself.

The Most Important Question

Here is a question that will be the foundation of your music promotion:

1. What kind of music do I create?

Take 30-45 minutes TODAY, to write a synopsis of your music. In this digital age where music flows like water, listeners rely on filters to help them decide what to listen to. Be your own filter. Don’t be afraid that you might turn people away. Not everyone is going to like your music and the sooner you’re able to move past that fact the sooner and more effecively you’ll be able to connect with and impact your audience.

Guidelines For Your Music Slogan

Here are some guidlines for your “music slogan”:

  • Make it simple and easy to remember.
  • Limit it to a 7-8 word sentence.
  • Be real - know your music - describe what it is, not what you want to be or what you think most people will like.
  • Avoid cliche phrases
  • Reference your inspirations

Write It And Use It

This slogan needs to be visible where ever your name/band name is visible:

  • CD’s - for people who are just browsing cd’s they can quickly get an idea of your sound.
  • Business Cards - When you’re trying to book gigs or simply get a cheap way to get your name out, create business cards with your band name, your music slogan, your website and contact information (email, phone etc). Make it easy for people
  • Your Website - your music slogan should be one of the first things people see on your website. Make it easy for potential listeners, publicity folks, and show sponsors to understand and communicate what you’re all about.
  • Concert flyers/posters - no one is going to come to listen to Jake and the Shenanigans if they haven’t a clue what they sound like.

Make It Easy

The purpose of writing this slogan is to make it easy for people to filter your music and decide if they want to take the next step.

Great advice. Bob Baker calls it a Brand Identity Statement (BIS). The result is the same. A simple concise statement that lets others know who you are and what you do.

Although not clever, witty, or elegant my Slogan/BIS is “Upbeat Acoustic Rock and Blues”.

A club owner once told me “Upbeat, eh? I like that as opposed to down and dirty...”. The only word in my BIS that doesn’t convey an image of what I do is the word “and”. So although I wish I had something more catchy--I’ll have to stay with this.

Thanks!
