We Hang Out With Aslan

Yesterday after school, I decided to take my kids to the zoo but, on the way there, it started raining. We almost didn’t go, but I thought they might enjoy getting wet and being a little crazy.

I’m so glad we did, because I got these amazing pics (on my phone – how I wish I’d had a real camera that didn’t lag 4 hours between shots).

My son’s comment was, “Can I pet him Mommy?” “Um…no.”

My daughter’s comment after I took this pic and watched the lion jump up and paw at the glass, “Mommy, can we go see the monkeys now?” “HELLO! Daughter! This is amazing and doesn’t happen every day.” Sigh.

I think my blog friend Marla Taviano would be proud of me. If you don’t know Marla, she and her family visited 52 Zoos in 52 weeks this past year and is writing a book about it. After seeing many of the pics on her blog, I can’t wait until the book comes out because they were REALLY cool. And I’m not even a big zoo person. Shhh…don’t tell Marla I said that.

Anyway, I’m SO glad I braved the rain. We had SUCH a fun time.

So what’s your favorite animal at the zoo?

I was reading your post in my Google Reader, so I only saw the first 2 pics, and I was getting all giddy. Kat and her kids went to the ZOO!! VERY cool lion pics!

And then I see US! (I won’t tell Marla what you said about not liking zoos.)

Is that CP Zoo? I just had a guy e-mail me and tell me that we really missed out by not going to that one. I told him we planned on it but that it didn’t work out. Still bummed I didn’t get to meet you!

My favorite animal? GIRAFFE!

I love the meerkats.  And the otters.  And the penguins.  And the primate enclosure.  Last time I went to the zoo Prince Harry was there.  Does he count as an exhibit? smile

I have chills, and not the good kind.  Zoos completely gross me out.  I didn’t really love them as a kid and as an adult avoid them as much as possible.  But glad y’all had fun!  smile

Marla,

Yes, it is the CP zoo. I really love it. It’s small, but it’s really, really pretty and the animals are so up close and personal.

If you’re ever in the area again, we must meet up!

You know, I looked for the giraffe pic to post here, but I didn’t see it. You should have a fav pics page on your blog or something.

Paula,

Prince Harry? That’s really cool! My kids like the otters too. At our zoo there is a clear tube slide that goes through the otter exhibit – it’s really neat.

TIA,

Somehow that surprises me. You travel the world, live in dangerous places etc and zoos freak you out?

I think you might actually like the Cameron Park Zoo in Waco. It’s really more like walking in a gorgeous park that happens to have tigers and elephants in it. grin

I love polar bears, otters, sea lions, and giraffes.  Lions are beautiful, but it seems like every time I have been to the zoo they are either hiding or asleep.

When I was a kid, it was always the flamingos.  Now, it’s the giraffes and the otters.  If our local zoo had koalas, though, they would surely take the cake.

Glad you guys had fun!  Those lions are beautiful…

Sounds like you had fun despite the rain!  It’s great to be spontaneous.

I really love zoos…so I like all the animals.  I’m a sucker for the meerkats–they are always entertaining!  And I really like bears and penguins too…but probably my favorite are gorillas and chimps.  Like I said, I like ‘em all.  smile

Erin – you need to come to our zoo. The lions are often right by the glass and interacting with us like in these pics. It’s so cool.

Annie – Otters are my kids favorite too.

Lisa – Sigh, we don’t have any gorillas or chimps at our zoo. We did just get some orangutans, though. My kids thought they were fascinating.

I can see how old-school zoos would gross someone out, but honestly? Zoos today are doing their best to make you feel like you’re with the animals in their natural habitats. Very cool. Very beautiful. Very un-gross. smile
