Thanks for compiling them.  I see a few on there that I’ve heard good things about and a few that I’ve never heard of.  But I’ve recently started doing some counseling at our local pregnancy test center, and reading some of these books will help me as I’m helping soon-to-be-moms walk into their new role.

Sarah,

That’s wonderful that you’re doing that.

Wow. That’s a lot of that’s in one sentence. Anyway…I hope some of these books are helpful for you!

Yay!  Thank you!

That is a good list of books.  I am going to jot down some of those.  I have read the Love languages one, it was very good, and Captivating, also a very good one.

My post today is also about parenting books! I think some of our choices overlap!

Jamie,

Ooooh, I think I’ll have to add a couple of those to my list – especially the first one. Thanks!

One of my favorites is How Children Learn by John Holt. It’s full of wonderful vignettes about kids teaching themselves using everyday objects and situations.

If you read Growing Kids God’s Way, be sure to also read http://www.ezzo.info and draw your own conclusions about whether or not the Ezzos’ practices are safe. You are already an experienced parent, so you’ll know what’s right for your family.

This post is quite old, but just had to share the gems I’ve found:

“Hints on Child Training” by H. Clay Trumbull (love the lack of presumption even in the title–contrast that with “Growing Kids God’s Way”).  This book was written by Elisabeth Elliot’s great grandfather in 1890 at age 60, after raising 8 children of his own.  I appreciate the timelessness of his thoughts and ideas.  MUCH wisdom in this book.  A broad spectrum of parenting issues are addressed.

I, too, found the “Strong-Willed Child or Dreamer” book very helpful in understanding not only some of my children, but also myself!

Loved “Shepherding a Child’s Heart” and would highly recommend “Instructing a Child’s Heart” (the follow-up book) for practical ways to implement the ideas from the first book.  Also, Ginger Plowman’s “Don’t Make Me Count to Three!”

Another good one, along the same lines, is “Parenting is Heart Work.”

“Grace Based Parenting” is on my nightstand, too.

And, finally, reading the “Little House” books aloud to my kids always inspires me as a mother…love that Ma Ingalls!
