It’s Icebreaker Time: The Band Edition

Photo by the get up kid.

Imagine that you woke up this morning with all the musical abilities you ever dreamed of having.

And now you want to start a cool band.

1. What would you name the band?

2. What style of music would you play?

3. Who would you go on tour with?

(Answer any or all of the above.)

Ready. Set. Go.

(My answers are in the comments.)

1. Tumble Dry Low – this was the name of a now defunct band I knew in college. It’s marketing brilliance. To this day I think of them every time I do laundry.

2. Singer/songwriter/indie/folk/pop/rock with a spash of hip hop and smidge of rap. (Clearly, I have a well defined style…)

3. If you’ve been reading my blog for long you might be rolling your eyes and saying these names even before I type them…but here goes:

- Brooke Fraser

- Amy Grant

- Dave Barnes (this third spot is a toss up between about 12,352,999 different artists…)

1) Euphrony and the Euphonics

2) ska/fusion with a global beat

3) No one would tour with us, so we would do an international tour of TCBY’s (hopefully with free frozen yogurt as a bonus).

My brother and I used to want to start a band named “For No Apparent Reason” so that when we were introduced, the announcer would say…

“Give it up for No Apparent Reason!”

We would be and Emo band…as long as I don’t have to wear skinny jeans.Yikes

I would tour with Lionel Richie…is he still alive?

1. Live Music Tonite (so we would be on marquees everywhere, but only in 1 place.  Kind of like when the Stones played as the Roches)

2. Blues rock with Horns, kind of Stevie Ray Vaughn meets Denver/ MHO

3. Stray Cats, Indigenous, and The Supertones

1.  “The Hooligans”, based on something that Mark Lee said during a Third Day show back in 1995.

2.  Maybe a Collective Soul type of sound, although we would also have some more acoustic, mellow songs in the repertoire.

3.  Maybe Derek Webb, Crowder, or heck, whoever would want to open for US.

In high school, we always wanted to have a band called swimming live fish..I can’t remember how it came to be, but we thought it was cool.  No other name would do.

Singer/songwriter of course!

Don’t know who I’d tour with…anyone who was easy to get along with.

The Magnetic Fridge Clickers….Great name for a band!

Style you say? I don’t know that “The Clickers” as the roadies call them can be defined that easily!

Touring with…..um, maybe the B52’s or REM? No wait….Cyndi Lauper….or, U2….that’s it. We would tour with U2 for sure because really, who is cooler than Bono?

1) Cricket Lightning

(my oldest son, now 11, gave me this idea when just 3 years old while listening to crickets as a summer lightning storm streaked across the sky)

2) southern rock/folk/pop

3) Third Day, DecembeRadio, Chris Sligh, Chris Daughtry

1)The Squids (my Karaoke band name for our rendition of “I’m A Believer” in High School)

2)Emo-Weezer meets Anberlin meets Jimmy Eat World meets Leeland (basically Christian emo)

3)Any of our influences could open for us and we’d all sing a medley of “Say It Ain’t So”/”The Middle”/”Paper Thin Hymn”/”Opposite Way” (my 4 favorite songs by those bands).
