Music Monday: Your Music Geneology
This Week’s Topic: What is your Musical Geneology?
Here are some possible directions to take go on this topic:
1. What was the first album you remember buying?
2. Who were the significant artists/songs/albums during your childhood/high school/college years?
3. What are the connections between the various artists in your musical geneology?
The sky’s the limit on this one. I think it could be pretty fun.

I don’t know it this is fun to read…but it is fun to do…
1. What was the first album you remember
- playing: Stravinsky’s Petroushka (WOW! I still love it!)(mebbe 7yrs old, my folks had one of those boxy record players with a tone arm that weighed about 8 oz (record player? what’s a tone arm?!?!)
buying? – (hmmm…album, not 45? (what’s a 45??))probably something by the Beatles (I can’t remember)
2. Who were the significant artists/songs/albums during your
childhood/high school/college years?
…childhood:
Pete Seeger
Benjamin Britten
Beach Boys
Brubeck’s “Time Out”
…high school…
Beatles “Revolver” “Sgt Pepper” “Abbey Road”
Hendix, Cream, Zappa, Sly Stone, Joni Mitchell
Varese , Boulez, Stravinsky
Miles “Bitches Brew”
…college (all the above, add Monk, Little Feat, Beethoven…)
…more recently:
Altan (Jug ‘o Punch)
Anonymous4 (St. Iago(?))
Issac Delgado (La Formula)
Herbie Hancock (River)
…I still listen to (some of) the older recordings…
3. What are the connections between the various artists in your musical geneology?
- Honesty
- Not afraid of a little complexity/ambiguity
- Not all the lyrics are great (especially on retrospect!), but they tend to have a positive message or interesting observation

Pete C,
That’s some fun music there…and quite a few artists I haven’t listened to. Thanks for participating and introducing me to new music.
