Get Your Own Personal Geek

geeky_glasses.jpg Lately, I’ve gotten lots of email with questions about the technical side of blogging.

I love getting those questions because I love helping people, but I thought I’d start answering them here so that other people with the same questions could get the answers too.

Common Questions

Here are some of the questions I’ll answer in the coming days:

1. How do I make text links in my posts?

2. What is CSS?

3. What is HTML? And what’s the difference between HTML and XHTML?

4. How do I embed YouTube videos into my posts?

5. How do I link to files so that others can download them?

6. What is RSS?

7. How do I make text flow around the pictures in a post?

Do You Have Any Questions?

If you have any blogging, web site or tech related questions please write them in the comments and I’ll do my best to answer them or find the answer. If you’re afraid your question is silly, just put a fake name in the name field of the comment form.

How do I make my blog look pretty?

So glad you asked! I’m not afraid to admit my poor technological skills.

1.  How can I know who visits my blog?  I don’t want a counter- it made me feel obsessive, but sometimes I’d like to know who is visiting. Something weird came up and I wished I’d have known how to check.

2.  Lately blogger won’t let me spell check.  Often during a blogging the buttons a the top stop working including spellcheck and add image.  I’ve cut and pasted to a different new entry and it still won’t work.  what’s up with that?

3. I’m not trying to be obstinate by posting my entire blog site for Parent’s U, but I haven’t figured out how to just link to one entry on my blog.

4.  I’ve always wanted a pic in my header.  I’ve had two people give me exact instructions, but it has never worked.

5.  What are the rules about posting an image? I can’t figure out how to credit the photographer or website nicely underneath.

Kat, maybe it would be a good idea to create the answers to these questions into an entire page on here.  Kind of a pro bono service to the blogging community.

Thanks Kat!!!

I can create a pretty site, but when it comes to the technical side I need all the help I can get!

I appreciate your expertise and willingness to share it!

truevyne,

As to the Blogger spellcheck – it’s just messed up at the moment.  Maybe they’ll fix it.  Maybe. (I know Kat doesn’t do much blogger, so I thought I’d answer.)

My question: How much chuck would a woodchuck chuck, in a 3D hi-res graphic that can fit in a sidebar?

Thanks Euphrony! I’m comforted to know it’s not just me.

Also, if you want to see how people get to your blog, I’d add statcounter.  If you’re a small time blogger like myself the free service is adequate and you can choose the invisible tracker so you don’t look obsessive. smile

Where do you get the cute pictures just like the geek glasses above your post?

Thanks for doing this.  I am a pastor getting ready to start a blog – and I don’t have a CLUE.  I am especially interested in how to make a blog that comes via email.  I like that option and feel that would reach more people in our church. I would like to offer both options, but don’t have a clue how to do any of it.
