Incredible Music: Brooke Fraser
Today I’ve found what could be my new favorite album of all time…even though I’ve only heard 3 songs so far.
Have you heard of Brooke Fraser? Yeah, me neither, until I saw a post about her on Liz’s blog.
Apparently, she’s got an album that’s gone platinum (x7) in New Zealand and Australia. (I tried to buy her album on Amazon.com but it’s $30 (!!!) because it’s not available here yet.)
She’s got an amazing voice, brilliant lyrics and stirring melodies.
This is the title track to her new album Albertine – about an orphan she met in Rwanda.
Here are the lyrics:
Albertine (Album Version)
I am sitting still
I think of Angelique
Her mother’s voice over me
And the bullets in the wall where it fell silentAnd on a thousandth hill
I think of Albertine
There in her eyes what I don’t see
With my ownRwanda
CHORUS
Now that I have seen
I am responsible
Faith without deeds is dead
Now that I have held you
In my own arms
I cannot let go `til you areI am on a plane
Across a distant sea
But I carry you in me
And in the dust on, the dust on my feetRwanda
CHORUS
Bridge
And I’ll tell the world
I will tell them where I’ve been
I will keep my word
I will tell them, AlbertineCHORUS
I am on a stage
A thousand eyes on me
I will tell them, Albertine
I will tell them, Albertine
The line that really strikes me is:
Now that I have seen
I am responsible
Here’s another great song called Shadowfeet:
According to Wikipedia, Brooke has toured with David Bowie, John Mayer and has written a number of songs for Hillsong and Hillsong United.
Rather eclectic,eh?
Seriously, I’m profoundly excited to find such great music.
If not, you’re welcome…
If so, why the heck didn’t you tell me? Sheesh.

Thanks to Elizabeth, I found out about her. I showed her videos to my bandmates yesterday and they were floored.

I love Brooke Fraser! She is amazing. She sings and writes a lot for Hillsong United, so you can check her out on some of their albums.

Ok. So I’m a total loser and didn’t read the last part of the post that, indeed, says that she sings for Hillsong. Duh.

no her tongue is not pierced. there are pictures of other people lip syncing in that vid.
kat…i have loved brooke fraser for a while now. buy her cd. it is worth it. i got to see her live in LA in july. it was awesome. small intimate venue. She’s really incredibly talented and brilliant, an amazing songwriter and amazing voice. They are working on getting her cd released here…but it takes a lot of work.
I have blogged about her much. and bragged. her website has several music videos that i played over and over until i received the cd. that was a great day. the amazing thing is that her songs are full of truth…without being offensive to the ears of non-believers. shadowfeet is one of my favorites!
and she plays guitar and the piano. great combination! she’s my favorite of the year =)

Kendra,
Thanks for the info!
CoolDad,
Tressa,
In the Albertine video, it does look like it’s pierced.
Lorijo,
Wow. I’m sure that was a great show! Hopefully, she’ll tour the U.S. again soon.
Deemus,
You’re welcome.

Her song strikes me as similar to Sarah Groves song (I saw what I saw) that I have posted on my blog. It too, is about Rwanda and being transformed by a trip there. Sarah’s is more emotive, but I really liked Brooke Frasier’s too. Her music was “rhythmically haunting” and very hip.

i just discovered her as well – saw hillsong united last month and it was amazing. $30 is a steep price! and i like having hard copies of albums, rather than itunes. but this time i may just have to give in.
thanks for posting, kat
i really feel like she could make anything sound lovely. i hope she comes back to the states soon!

FYI, it is $30 because of the cost of cd’s in Australia/NZ.

The Itunes download is $10, then you can burn it to CDs – one for the car, one for the office.

Thanks so much for introducing us to Brooke. She’s a wonderful young Christian woman, and her voice and songs are tops. She’s like a breath of fresh air on the airwaves. And I learned about her neww album just in time for Christmas CD giving!

I’m not amazed her CD is 30$ a piece. She’s not Britney Spears or Beyonce. She’s not commercial. This is the type of music only good music lovers know about hence the price. Not anyone would pay so much for a CD unless they are into non-commercial talent-based music. The singer has a lovely face but there’s nothing sexy about her. She seems to be innocent and her voice…simply angelic.
